Topic: Who would be a good player?

Message 1 / 19

Hi all
Listening to the old shows as I do everyday and how impressive at times Clement and Kenneth were, I wondered who past or present in history would I consider a good player.
I thought
Terry Thomas (would have been funny)
Harry Worth (worth a punt)
Roy Hood (Dont think he has been on)
John Junkin (Some may remember him)
David Frost (dont think he would do it) Slow talker like Clement
Frank Carson (He would have been unable to do it, but funny)

Anyway just a few if anyone wants to add please do and lets see how it goes.

Wayne

Do you mean Roy Hudd?
I do indeed remember John Junkin.

Some more to consider:
The cast of ISIHAC - they have to be quick-thinking to do that.
Tony Hancock would have been useless, he needed a script and even had to read them on TV at the end!
Eric Sykes, a script writer so may have been good at it.
My all-time hero - Spike Milligan, again a script writer and used to a lot of ad-libbing on The Goons. Maybe that would have been a good skill to have for this.

there are so many people aren’t there.

I used to love Morecambe and Wise, and would love to have heard Eric Morecambe on with Kenneth. Yes I know, the M&W shows were scripted, but by all accounts Eric was a great ad libber too.

What about Tommy Cooper...

Larry Grayson or Danny LaRue would have been interesting competition for Kenneth...

Spike Milligan would have been very funny – but would he have adapted to the structured environment?

Bruce Forsyth also comes to mind.

I know this will appeal to some of you too – wouldn’t it have been interesting if Frank Muir and Dennis Nordern had appeared on a show with say Kenneth and Clement. We can dream, can’t we...

struggling to think of women candidates!

Of those named so far, John Junkin, Barry Cryer, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden and Willie Rushton did do the show with varying degrees of success... I thought Tim in particular was very good on it. Graeme and Barry were also pretty good.

I imagine Eric Morecombe would be good but Tommy Cooper?

Another hero of mine but I don't think he would be any good to be honest as he was a man of one-liners.

Plus, despite the apparent catalogue of random disaster TC used to rehearse and rehearse his whole act and it never strayed from the script by all accounts.

FM and DN - now that would have been an episode! Good choice.

Women?
Shappi Khorsandi

How about thinking outside the UK box for a bit...
Roseanne?
Elaine Strict? She was often chat shows and was never short of something to say.
Joan Rivers - she can talk for England, well the US anyway :o)
Rita Rudner - I love her act

As an aside, Have you noticed how many US comediennes (& comedians) are Jewish? Wonder why?

Frank Muir was apparently invited onto Just a Minute's predecessor "One Minute Please" but declined because he found the format too restrictive:

http://www.turnipnet.com/whirligig/radio/oneminpl.htm

I don't know if he was right, but the format doesn't suit everyone's talents.

I think a lot of non-UK people would be good, but how do you ensure they got lots of performances (to help them get to be good players).  Someone like a Greg Brady would be excellent I think.

JAM has lots of great women players at the moment (Perkins, Ayres, Eclair & Hancock). Most of them seem to not be comedians by main profession.  Think they should try Dench and Holly Walsh, and persevere with Balding.

Bea Arthur good one liners
Lucile Ball very very clever woman despite her on screen image

Tony Hancock did ad lib during some Hancock episodes so might have been good when freed from a script and given license to roam. He certainly had the intelligence and vocabulary.

Elaine Strict is memorable for not getting the game and causing chaos. Its a fabulously hilarious episode. Kind of like when Terry Wogan had a stint, it was good the first time but quickly got tiring.

A Few Others

Nick Hewer - very droll sense of humour, smart and quick and wouldnt make NP feel so old.
Mel Gedroyc - occasionally copresents with Sue Perkins tho maybe not on the same panel as it could come across as a gimmick.
Billy Connolly
Gene Wilder - No idea if he would have been any good but would have loved to heard him do just one show.

How do you know what religion they belong to? Is this common knowledge in the US (I just assume you are American now)?

Religion is a common topic in US comedy. Larry the Cable Guy and his friends skewer the southern Holy Roller religions, Saturday Night Live is based in New York and pokes fun at Catholics and Jews, dominate religions around there, and Hispanic comedy from Southern California has a lot of fun with Catholicism, too. --- In just-a-minute@..., "Espen Krømke" <espen.kromke@...> wrote:

Another American: Woody Allen (which reinforces Don's point). He's versatile, witty, and can talk about Anything.

I mean, it's not like I don't know how to do the reseach, I'm just puzzled as to why you seemed to have done that. But then again I come from one of the most ateist countries in the world, so I guess the correct question would more be "why do I not seem to care". ;)

Are you sitting down?

Must admit I had to look at my browser History to remember some of this lot.
It came back to me once I started.

I was watching House of Cards at the weekend - a truly excellent British political drama

I recognised one of the actresses but couldn't remember where from

I looked up HoC on Wikipedia - turns out she was Alphonsia Emmanuel
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Cards

AM doesn't have a Wikipedia page so went to IMDB and saw she was in the film 'Peter's Friends'
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0256456/

I looked that up on Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter's_Friends

I spotted Rita Rudner right at the front of the film poster
I was surprised having seen RR's standup routines many times years ago
I saw that Rita and her husband wrote it and she was in it

Looked up Rita Rudner on Wikipedia, noticed the Jewish references
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rita_Rudner

Looked her up on Google and found her on the many Jewish Comedians/Comediennes sites along with many others I recognised.

Next....

Getting back to the topic of US celebrities who'd make good players of the game, I've always found David Letterman to be amusing when he gets off-script and has to ad lib.

Of course, JAM could never pay enough for most of these individuals.

(Though if HIGNFY can get William Shatner...)

Hi All
Well apart from the Jewish debate, that I am not getting into.

Some interesting names been put forward, consider it like the fantasy football league.

Shatner, yep agree he would be  funny, but too full of himself.
Rita Rudner yep agree,
Joan Rivers would be a scream if the bleep machine worked "again", remember the episode where the "King on his death bed said" Peter Jones so funny.
Others
Steve Martin
Eddie Murphy
Prince Harry funny naturally.
Phil Tuffnel

No kidding. I am a Star Trek fan, and the less Shatner say in public the better.

Don, you're the best. Thanks for that little glimpse into your life (and that is said without hesitation *or* sarcasm)!

AM doesn't have a Wikipedia page so went to IMDB and saw she was in the film 'Peter's Friends'

I looked that up on Wikipedia

I spotted Rita Rudner right at the front of the film poster
I was surprised having seen RR's standup routines many times years ago
I saw that Rita and her husband wrote it and she was in it

Looked up Rita Rudner on Wikipedia, noticed the Jewish references

Looked her up on Google and found her on the many Jewish Comedians/Comediennes sites along with many others I recognised.

Next....

> little glimpse

'little' being the operative word - it took much less time to do it than it did to type it
Imagine doing that without t'Internet...
