Topic: Missing JAM episodes numbers in Windows Explorer/ mp3 files - sorted

At last I have been able to sort out my Just A Minute collection. Some of you, like me, may have been unable to change or add episode numbers to some of the mp3 episodes we acquire from various sources. That's the Windows Explorer column with the # at the top, under file Properties Details it can usually be edited at # but not always.

I have just downloaded the latest version of iTunes, which is very pretty and far easier to use for organising files now, to my vista laptop. Click on each JAM track there "get info" and you can just put whatever number you want under the first half of the track number box, and it transcribes it back to the file in Windows Explorer. Hey presto all my episodes are numbered 1 to 796.

Computer clever people already know this no doubt.

Dave

Nice to share experiences like these.

I'd like to toss in another recommendation, possibly more suited for the more computer savvy people amongst us but nonetheless:

The tool I use for managing my mp3 collections is a handy little program called KID3. It can do a lot of things, like extracting tags from filenames, or rename files based on tags. So for instance, if you want all your JAM files to follow the same naming convention, you can have the program to rename all the files to follow a pattern like "JAM - <date> - <title>.mp3".

Likewise, if you receive a mp3-file without any tags in it, you can have the program extracting info from the file name (typically date and title) and insert it into the tags.

All editing can also be done in bulk operations like editing tags of multiple files at once, e.g. the year tag, "cover art" or other tags where typically many files will have the same tag value.

It really is a powerful tool, it's free, and available for all platforms, here:

A great and free tool is MP3tag, which lets you edit the metadata for MP3s in bulk. Even if the filename is right, most MP3 players pay more attention to the metatags when deciding play order.

A related free tool I use a lot is Lupas Rename 2000 which allows bulk renaming of files based on chosen patterns or text substitutions.

Would not be without either of them.
