Topic: Handy tools for mp3 archives

Seems like MP3tag is the most popular Windows tagging tool then - at least amongst us JAMmers. :)

But while we're on the subject of handy tools for archive maintenance, do any of you guys know of a good Windows tool for ID3 tag diagnosis/failchecking/correcting?

I use "MP3Diags":
That program runs through all the tags and streams within the file, and suggest actions wherever it finds inconsistency or errors. I've experienced certain players actually crashing while reading the tags of some really messed up mp3-files, and this program has cleaned and fixed these files with ease.

I love this program, however I have never tried it in Windows (I use Linux) so I don't know how well this program runs on that platform (read the authors warning on the link below). But do anyone know of a similar program? It really is a great tool to keep a large archive well maintenanced.

Here's the download page for MP3Diags, should anyone be interested:

A great and free tool is MP3tag, which lets you edit the metadata for MP3s in bulk. Even if the filename is right, most MP3 players pay more attention to the metatags when deciding play order.

A related free tool I use a lot is Lupas Rename 2000 which allows bulk renaming of files based on chosen patterns or text substitutions.

Would not be without either of them.

Hi Espen. I've never even heard of a tag diagnostic tool before!  I never realised bad tags were an issue.
I'll have a look at MP3Diags.

Thanks for the tip!

Forgot to mention. Another nice tool is MP3Gain, which tweaks tag information to standardise the volume of MP3 files - so you don't pump up the volume to hear one episode and get deafened by the next episode.

As far as I know it does not edit the actual MP3 data, so there will not be any generational lossiness.

You are correct, it only adds a tag with the normalization info (essentially, telling the player how much it should lower/boost the playback of that particular file), no editing of the audio stream. It requires the players to support the tag though, but I guess most do today.

Not forgetting my tool of choice for 'topping and tailing' mp3 files by editing the mp3 frames directly (so no 'generational lossiness' once again) mp3DirectCut.

Useful for trimming mp3s downloaded from iPlayer via Radio Downloader, get_iPlayer and others.
