Topic: Radio 4 Extra - My Personal Assistant

This morning's serving of JAM is another Stereo recording, originally broadcast last year on the 8th August 2011, with Paul Merton and Tony Hawks on the left, Sheila Hancock and Graham Norton on the right and Nicholas in the middle.

As it's the last episode in this series of repeats on BBC Radio 4 Extra I'm posting links to the two folders I created that contain all 12 episodes. The first includes the 4 Extra announcer at the start and end of each episode for those that like to hear the 2012 continuity:

http://www.mediafire.com/?kxtkf3vl83bxd
JAM 2012 R4X

The other folder contains just the upgraded audios of the episodes themselves:

http://www.mediafire.com/?4kkhdyrqm7c6g
JAM 2012 BBC

Today's episode is, of course, also available via iPlayer - but only for the next 7 days!

No more JAM on the BBC this year but there will be a new series early next year and hopefully a further selection of repeats on 4 Extra soon...

Simon

A big thanks to all concerned from me as well. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2013!

Robert

PS Why is it so important for the show who is sitting on the RHS and who is sitting on the LHS? This wasn't a featuire of the earlier episodes i.e. no mention from Nicholas then.

The seating arrangement isn't really important, Robert - it's just an extra bit of trivia that can be worked out when listening to the Stereo mix.

The main constant seems to be that Paul is always seated on the far left - this matches his position on the recent TV episodes. I've yet to go through all the Stereo episodes and work out who's sitting where - it might make for some interesting stats. Of course, we need Stereo mixes for every episode first...

In the early episodes was Kenneth sat where Paul now is with Clement beside him next to Nicolas and Peter and/or Derek were on the other side? Thats how i have it in my head. Anyone know if that is right and if Derek or Peter were on the outside (ie not beside or closest to Nic).
Did the four have always their own positions and the guest (if there was one) sat in the vacant seat?

Just got me wondering?

I do know the answer to this.

Let’s say that from left to right, looking from the audience at the stage, it is seat one, seat two, whistleblower, Nicholas, seat three, seat four.

For the first few years (series 3-5), it was always Kenneth in seat one, Clement in seat two, the woman guest in seat three, Derek in seat four.

When Peter joined, he sat in the seat that was vacant... ie, Derek’s if he wasn’t there, Clement’s if he wasn’t there, the guest’s if there was no guest.

In 1979, someone (presumably producer David Hatch) must have decided Peter had earned a permanent seat and from that point he always sat in seat three. Instead the guest sat wherever there was a vacant seat.

In 1989, Wendy Richard got seat one and from then on she was almost always there. When she was dumped in 1994, Paul  began to usually sit in seat one, though he would still sometimes sit by Peter in seat four. By 1998, he was permanently in seat one.

Obviously with just one true “regular” these days, seating changes a lot. But I notice that Graham Norton always sits in seat four. Tony Hawks is always in seat one or four, unless both Paul and Graham are also on the show. In general, they seem to put the two most senior players on the outside seats, eg, if Gyles or Sue are on, with Paul, they’ll sit in seat four.

Of course these are generalisations and there will be times when things get changed around before someone cites some show where these rules didn’t apply!

I know that Clement was adamant that he must sit in seat two and objected strongly if a producer tried to shift him!

Thanks for that Dean. Very interesting to know where they all sat/sit.

Wendy returned for the tv shows in 1999 and a few shows in 2002/3 so it might have been amicable. Maybe filming of Eastenders and other projects made it more difficult to attend recordings. Or did Clement's lists drive her to near meltdown?

Hello
If I recall correctly, Wendy asked Nic why she was not being asked to appear on JAM, he said that the producers felt she was too aggressive, but did not have the heart to tell her this and made an excuse.

I know some people really don't like Aimee McDonald on the show, but I find her so funny and winds Kenneth up no end :)

Oh, I always look forward to listening to the shows with Aimee in them.  Partly because it's hard to take her persona seriously, and partly because of Kenneth's over-reaction.

By coincidence have reached series 40 episode 10 (am going thru the Merton era episode by episode) which has Wendy on the panel. She had a go at Nicholas after the introductions, a few minutes later she made a comment about Nic and then not long after that had a go at Sue Perkins for not knowing anything about the HMS Victory. Not the best way to ingratiate yourself to the others.

Yes, she did seem to be a little off with many people at times and she usually did not stick to the rules either, which at times did make it funny and that's the point of the show, it is a comedy show after all.
I think her Pauline Fowler role was rubbing off on her at times as she used to be a fun person as I understand it. I think it was at times a cover up for what she did not know that led her to be off hand with people.

Its a shame that is part of what we may remember of her really.  Mind you I and many others fancied her rotten as Miss Brahms in "Are you being served", so not all bad eh.

The latter two might have been intended to be in a jokey way, if so they failed.

I dont mind Wendy on the show, is always fun to hear her explode when Clement starts listing racecourses, towns and anything else.
