Re: Radio 4 Extra - My Personal Assistant

I do know the answer to this.

Let’s say that from left to right, looking from the audience at the stage, it is seat one, seat two, whistleblower, Nicholas, seat three, seat four.

For the first few years (series 3-5), it was always Kenneth in seat one, Clement in seat two, the woman guest in seat three, Derek in seat four.

When Peter joined, he sat in the seat that was vacant... ie, Derek’s if he wasn’t there, Clement’s if he wasn’t there, the guest’s if there was no guest.

In 1979, someone (presumably producer David Hatch) must have decided Peter had earned a permanent seat and from that point he always sat in seat three. Instead the guest sat wherever there was a vacant seat.

In 1989, Wendy Richard got seat one and from then on she was almost always there. When she was dumped in 1994, Paul  began to usually sit in seat one, though he would still sometimes sit by Peter in seat four. By 1998, he was permanently in seat one.

Obviously with just one true “regular” these days, seating changes a lot. But I notice that Graham Norton always sits in seat four. Tony Hawks is always in seat one or four, unless both Paul and Graham are also on the show. In general, they seem to put the two most senior players on the outside seats, eg, if Gyles or Sue are on, with Paul, they’ll sit in seat four.

Of course these are generalisations and there will be times when things get changed around before someone cites some show where these rules didn’t apply!

I know that Clement was adamant that he must sit in seat two and objected strongly if a producer tried to shift him!

In the early episodes was Kenneth sat where Paul now is with Clement beside him next to Nicolas and Peter and/or Derek were on the other side? Thats how i have it in my head. Anyone know if that is right and if Derek or Peter were on the outside (ie not beside or closest to Nic).
Did the four have always their own positions and the guest (if there was one) sat in the vacant seat?

Just got me wondering?
