Topic: Using Dropbox as a share resource + Old News Quiz Episodes please!(Don possibly)

Hi All,
Happy New Year All!

A few years ago I uploaded all my available clue episodes up to mediashare only to see them disappear after time. Since then I have my whole collection of JAM and Clue on Dropbox. I don't have much knowledge of these sort of things - but is there any reason why Dropbox can't be used to share links? It seems that it would be there for longer than my old Mediashare effort lasted? I note that it is not used by any experienced sharers - just interested why not?!

Also as a follow up to the previous comment and what prompted me really - I note that Don's News Quiz archive is now dead in the Links section. Does anyone or perhaps has Don a new location for the archive? Thanks again!

Happy New Year C

As far as I'm aware the 'longest lasting' file sharing site is MediaFire, especially if you upload the files as zip archives. Zip files are not checked for copyright violation either.

Of course, things may well have changed since we* came to those conclusions some time ago.

The other alternative is to pay for the service; if you pay for file hosting the files /never/ expire. They may still get checked for copyright violation on some sites.

There are other options such as Microsoft SkyDrive, Google Picasa Web, Apple The Cloud etc but if you don't have an account yourself you can usually only view or listen to files deposited as opposed to downloading them to your PC.

* Can't remember if 'we' is this Yahoo group or one of the others I'm in.

Broken links now deleted.

Thanks Don,
That does explain it. I wish I had known about the zip folder 'trick' before I uploaded!
I am a paid Dropbox user, and recently I believe they have changed things to allow non dropbox users to receive files. I could therefore I suppose supply Clue episodes to any that want them!

I don't suppose you have moved your News Quiz archive anywhere have you - does it exist online these days?! It was whilst trying to download your archive that I felt prompted to write!

Anyway - Thanks Don

Hi
Yes you can make a folder public on drop box or just invite certain people A few gig free and as you invite you get more free space. Its difficult as their are so many files, it might be worth popping them on an 8.4Gb DVD and sending it to each other so we all are at the same point? I don't mind doing this if I had a definitive list and archive to work with.

Yes I suppose that the DVD would be an easy option! I am not sure of the state of Clue on the links page - but I do have I believe as complete a collection as possible - and would like to make it all available. I would gladly make a DVD or share my dropbox folder. I need to check a few things on dropbox - possibly I could invite you Wayne as a trial and reassure myself of a few things and see if it works!

Or get your own domain. For as little as a couple of dollars a week you get huge amounts of storage and unlimited bandwidth...  and no-one plays (C) police.

Hi All,
Happy New Year All!

8.4GB DVD ?

My ISIHAC archive (series 1-58) is 25GB

My News Quiz archive (series 23-79) is 11GB

OK so they're unsorted at the moment but I doubt if the size will be reduced by THAT much when sorted.

25gb? Wow - what quality episodes do you have Don? My 'complete' clue is around 7.5gb. Most of the latter episodes are around 25mb each - whilst a lot of the early ones are only 7-8mb each. There are 429 episodes - I have around 420 x 20mb (average) is roughly 8Gb if my maths is correct. Do you have good quality episodes? I would be very grateful if you could share these Don! I thought I had as complete and best quality Clue episodes as I could find.

As a guide, Surpass Hosting offers hosting on an American server with 100GB Disk Space, 1000GB Bandwidth, 5 Domains, 99.9% Guarantee SLA
Cost: From $10/month (month to month) to $7/month (3 year payment).  I'm not promoting them, but they are typical.

Finding a gem domain name is a fun way to spend a wet weekend... try whois.com.  I grabbed nylon.net 14 years ago, and still remember being gleeful to find it available, even way back then.  You can still buy .com domains, as long as you don't mind the name being completely unmemorable: all of the single-word dot coms disappeared years ago.

Try this place to find unregistered domain names.  According to them, titrates.com is available... I'm not sure whether one would use this domain for a chemistry site, or a brothel.

I must admit: the 13.56G includes 4.64G of FLAC (lossless compression) episode versions.

So my Clue Girth deflates to about 9G.  (Where's my fluffer?)

[But my 9G is still bigger than Cymro's. Hehehehehe!]

<greybeard>
Sigh.
9,000 megabytes of radio comedy - for just ONE show?
My complete radio archive is 114G.

My first computer had 4K RAM and a cassette tape for storage.

That made me laugh!!!

Thanks for the advice. This might be the avenue to follow! I have a few other programmes that might be of interest to others that nobody else seems to share (mark kermode and Simon mayos film review - all episodes since 2005 for example) but thought Media share a pointless endeavour. Possibly of course nobody else shares them for good reason!!!

One thing about Dropbox though - seeing as both Wayne and I were users - my clue collection of 7.5 gb transferred over to him in about 10 seconds apparently!!

Regarding your clue collection - could I ask what quality your early episodes are? Does clue hide somewhere on Nylon.net

Hello Cymro

It's unlikely that 7.5Gb transferred in 10 seconds. More likely is that the names of the files transferred in 10 seconds with the content of the files dribbling down over the next few hours or days.

The only thing I'd say about commercial hosting is that you need to choose carefully. Not only do you want a company that's going to be around for a while but you need to check exactly what you're allowed to store. A lot of hosting companies insist you host websites and not a loose collection of individual files. Until fairly recently I had backups of various household files stored with one such hosting company - they decided they weren't a website (which they weren't) and deleted them. So the lesson - read the T&Cs *very* carefully.

Cheers

Hi KJ
The files transferred over to the drop box in seconds, although as you say they may not have moved only the files names, but no indication of this.  As dropbox goes they don't care what is hosted it seems and it not a web host, but a file storage depository. I agree I would never use one to store important files and only for stuff I have access too in other locations, but it is good for sharing.

Agree with kJ there.
To transfer 7.5GB in 10 seconds would require 6Gb/s of bandwidth assuming my calculation is correct.  Wowser! - we can only wish.

Back to my archives...

A 6MB 30 minute mp3 audio file will sound rubbish.
A 25MB 30 minute mp3 audio file may sound good, but it's not guaranteed.

However, size isn't everything, there are many other factors involved.
A 6MB file can be upscaled to a higher bit rate to give 25MB but it won't sound any better.

To get good audio quality from mp3 encoded speech you need at least 96kb/s IMHO.
I go for (at least) 128kb/s if I have a choice.

I have not listened to all the episodes so I cannot say whether my files are all good quality or not but I can say none of the ones I glanced at last night were low bit rate.

You are of course correct KJ and Don - the connection is not that fast - but I think what is interesting - they became Wayne's files within 10 seconds. How long it takes him to download to his computer is down to him - he can do it piecemeal or in one chunk - but they are now in his possession - and that transfer only took seconds!

Don, I have looked carefully at my clue archive - I would say that around half of my early series are in the rubbish 7mb category. I am still intrigued as to where you get your hands on enough 128kb/s Clue episodes to create a 25gb archive. I am a passionate clue fan - possibly more so than JAM - though it would be close - so you can imagine my excitement if you do have much higher quality episodes - as I have been searching and archiving for years - and have never seen anything higher than I had - which is around 8GB in total.

By the way - my recent few years also come in 128kb/s - and weigh in at around 40mb - and even those are included in the 8gb.

If you ever had the time and if you could ever make them available I would be in your debt! You don't use dropbox by any chance?!!!!!

Dropbox works in an unusual way.

When you place the file in your Dropbox folder, it performs a quick checksum calculation (a sum to identify a unique file).  If that file exists anywhere else on Dropbox, that is, if anyone else has the exact same file, then it skips the upload process.  It simply makes a copy of the file that already exists.

That's why files on Dropbox sometimes appear to upload in a few short seconds.

Of course, the receiving user still has to go through the download process, but the files will have appeared in their account near instantaneously.

Aha - that explains it then James. Thanks.

When I used DropBox before it synchronised a folder on my PC to a folder on another users PC which, as you say, requires upload and download.

Using the web GUI to monitor the Cloud storage folder, as opposed to the folder on the PC, will make an existing file appear almost instantaneously.

The DropBox server (or cluster of servers, more like) will be a bigger, faster version of your PC.
So it's just a question of copying the files between directories or folders.
It doesn't take long to do that on your PC now does it?

Anyways back to ISIHAC...
I never said all my programmes were 128kb/s - I said I get them if I can.

Anway, for comparison to what you have I will upload ISIHAC s1 to MediaFire.
They are top-and-tailed, tagged and normalised for volume.
Most eps are 56 or 64kb/s with a couple of 128kb/s for good measure.

Download them and compare to what you have for sound quality.

Thank you Don - I really appreciate this. My series 1 has a few very low quality episodes - so I am crossing my fingers here! If you do have upgraded episodes - and I suspect that you do - could I possibly highlight my poorer episodes for comparison? I would very much like the best version possible - but also am aware that I am causing you some work - and I am sure you don't want to upload the whole lot!

On Dropbox - I guess I was hoping that Dropbox would be an answer that would solve my issues with the longevity or life of files on MediaFire. Possibly it is a solution for direct requests from someone - but not as a whole group share.

Thanks for all the help and advice.

Look forward to the files

C.
