Finding a gem domain name is a fun way to spend a wet weekend... try whois.com.  I grabbed nylon.net 14 years ago, and still remember being gleeful to find it available, even way back then.  You can still buy .com domains, as long as you don't mind the name being completely unmemorable: all of the single-word dot coms disappeared years ago.    

Try this place to find unregistered domain names.  According to them, titrates.com is available... I'm not sure whether one would use this domain for a chemistry site, or a brothel.
