Topic: An episode not listed on Dean's Episode Guide

Message 1 / 55
Clitheroe KidJan 26, 2013

In all cases, the BBC Transcription Service had to reduce the episodes from their full length of 30 minutes to 25 mins, in order to fit physically on a 25 minute LP.

Sometimes they achieved this by the obvious solution of simply chopping out one entire round.

If the subject which got dropped was the very first round, this affects those of us who use that subject to index the shows; but in my opinion we should NOT rename a show, just because the original first subject is not included in some recordings of that episode.

That could be confusing, where a complete recording of that episode is held, perhaps in a poor quality, or where a complete recording later turns up.

I just checked my copy of Episode 207 and it also begins with the first subject as 'My Strength' - even though the file is entitled:
s10e13#207,1975-12-16=Polo, ANDREE.mp3

So it looks like we need to rename that episode in our collections and on Dean's webpage.

I agree - and seeing as there is a complete copy of the episode with Polo as the first round - the question for me anyway is - is there any point in keeping the My Strengths version? Probably not!

The confusing part of all this is that the 25 minute edit contains all 10 rounds. The longer version of the show, running 28 minutes, contains only 9 rounds!

I've therefore renamed my 28m version as "My Strength", but left the 25m version as "Polo". As they have both been edited differently it's worth keeping both.

I noticed the same thing today with episodes of "Quote... Unquote" where the BBC have made both 24 minute and 29 minute edits of the same episodes.

The longer version (presumably the UK original broadcast) excludes "Polo", starts with "My Strength" and includes both "Yellow Lines" and "Beating The System".

The 25 minute (presumably TS) version includes both "Polo" and "My Strength" but excludes "Yellow Lines" and "Beating The System".

"Polo" is only in the shorter (TS) version. "Yellow Lines" and "Beating The System" are only in the longer (UK) version. So one needs to keep both versions. Personally I choose to label the files as:
1975.12.16 s10e13 #207[UK] - My Strength
1975.12.16 s10e13 #207[TS] - Polo

If you can, try playing the two files from the same place at the same time, for example in two separate mp3 players.
You may find they soon get of sync as one plays faster than the other.

This has been noticed before, I can't remember if it was in this Group or not.

Thank you, Charlie. I missed the extra rounds when scanning through the two files yesterday. I did notice the additional banter between rounds has been edited differently as well. Upon closer inspection the longer (UK) version contains:
My Strength, Cowboys, My Last Hat, Pognophobia, Edward VII, The Unexpected, Yellow Lines, A Balanced Meal, When I'm Cornered, Beating the System, Ties

The alternate (TS) version contains:
Polo, My Strength, Cowboys, My Last Hat, Pognophobia, Edward VII, The Unexpected, A Balanced Meal, When I'm Cornered, Ties

Are there any other episodes that include additional rounds not included during the original broadcasts or is this the only one?

... Or how about we splice the episodes to create the "complete version"? Or would that be to tamper too much with history? :)

Simon - I have one other episode in two versions, being 1977.03.16 s11e20 #239. The longer (I assume UK) version starts with "Peanuts", includes "Fowl", but excludes "Ties". The shorter (I assume TS) version starts with "Fowl", includes "Ties", but excludes "Peanuts".

Many of our current collection are from ABC and, therefore, are the shorter TS edits rather than the longer UK broadcasts. Only if one has both versions can one compare to see what has been omitted by TS and, more importantly, to see if there is anything extra in the TS version that wasn't in the UK. However, such differences don't leap out at one unless (as with the two episodes above) the "first round" is different.

I note that Dean's transcripts for both s10e13 #207 and s11e20 #239 are, effectively, those of "merged recordings" in that they include all the available rounds despite the fact that they seemingly weren't all broadcast at once! So Dean has been over this ground thoroughly already and can hopefully tell us if there are any more such episodes.

Dean - Over to you.

I'm probably being stupid, but what does TS stand for?

Also, I have a copy of the 'Polo' episode, and was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of the 'My Strength' copy.

Thank you,

Josey

Espen - It's a matter of taste and I wouldn't criticise such an approach. Certainly it's an approach that has been adopted successfully for making "extended" restorations of ISIRTA (and, I think, The Goon Show). Interestingly, Dean's JAM transcripts for both s10e13 #207 and s11e20 #239 are, effectively, those of "merged recordings" in that they include all the available rounds despite the fact that they seemingly weren't all broadcast at once!

This is getting very confusing.
Having went thru the two versions i have i find i have two Peanuts with fouls but no ties. So where can i get the other?

On another note, ive said elsewhere that i am unable to grasp the whole uploading thing, dont get me started on the laptop i use, but im happy to share any nessessary files thru email attachments - i can email them to someone and then they can put them here. Its a long method admittedly.

In these episodes where we have one topic but not another am i right in saying that we dont have a complete unedited episode? If so is it just those topics missing and therefore if we paste the missing topic back into the best quality one wouldnt we have it all?

If this has been asked before forgive me?

these are the two ones that stick in the memory but it has happened with other shows. The Peter Cook one that was on the classic CD a few years ago was longer than my previous version. I have a feeling one of the Clement-Peter-Aimi-Patrick shows from 75-6 was similar.

All,

I've gone ahead and edited together the extended version of Polo (#207):

I used the TS version for most of the source, as the sound quality was better.  I spliced in the rounds Yellow Lines and Beating the System from the original UK broadcast.

I encoded the entire thing at a higher bitrate than either of the source files in order to minimise generational loss.  Total runtime is 29:30.

You can grab it from my site:

http://3pb.net/jam

I'll look at that other episode.

Thanks for providing that, but dammit, I hate those download sites that provide 4 download buttons/links and only one of them actually gives you what you want, while the others are trying to trick you into downloading their crap!

Make sure you click the link at the very bottom that says "Download your file from sendspace".  Ignore all of the other big, colourful buttons and links.

While I have a small fear that if dissecting JAMs into segments will cause many of us to eventually explode from cumulative OCD, I don't mind.
All this new Jamminess is leading us to a better world.
Another JAM topic recovered from the Black Hole is another topic to be enjoyed  :-)

I'll look at that other episode.

No problem --

I like the approach of at least keeping the extended versions for my listening pleasure, and keeping the two original versions for historical accuracy.

With that in mind, #239 is now also at that location.  This one runs 32:09 with all rounds intact, and was a little stranger, as the order of the rounds changed between versions.

I've used Dean's site/transcript as my reference when putting this together, which actually means that Sheila starts two rounds in a row.  It seems to flow perfectly well, but if someone can suggest an alternate order for everything, I'd be quite happy to re-edit it.

Might I add to that, the cut between the end of Peanuts to the start of Pottering About is quite jarring and seems to cut Peter Jones off in mid-sentence...

...it's the exact same cut that the original UK version used, down to 1/100th of a second.  It's actually quite jarring in that version, too.

Fantabulous James, fantabulous. Thank you for those, will be great having all the rounds in one episode. Tho we now have 3 edits for 1 episode.
So out of interest does this mean that all of the 25 or so minute shows we have are incomplete due to TS editing them down?
The Beeb broadcast of Series 1 Episode 5 for the first time in decades a few months back is certainly longer than the rest from around that period running in at 3 seconds shy of 30 minutes whilst the others are between 25 and 27 minutes long.

Obviously this shouldnt result in burning all the ones we do have and putting ash on our heads - tho it is wet outside so setting fires is not very practicle at the moment anyway.

Dropbox is great -- though for those already using it, a shared JAM folder could seriously eat into our already tight space quotas (shared files take quota from everyone with whom the folder is shared)...

I agree that the misleading "Download" banners on Sendspace and its ilk are most aggravating, though mercifully I've never fallen prey to one.

So, yeah, some sort of closed share for the group would be great.

I was actually meaning using Dropbox as a means of sharing files rather than as a permanent archive.

The danger of using it as an archive would be that one user might forget how it works and delete some files.
That file would then be deleted for everyone.

My present JAM collection as it currently sits is approx 13 gigs... I'm assuming that is also true for anyone who has been trying to acquire all the upgraded versions they can get their hands on. Mediafire allows you 50 gigs with their free version, which allows way more than enough head room. (In comparison, Dropbox only allows 2 gigs with the free version, so as others have stated, its not a good option for an archive.) The problem with the free version of Mediafire is there is a limitation on bandwidth (the amount you that can be shared/downloaded each month) with the free version. I'm not a good judge on how much bandwidth would be adequate for a group like us to have a shared archive. I think though that bandwidth would be THE issue with ANY free version.

What we had (before James kindly supplied his "merged" episodes) were two separate and distinct versions - each produced by the BBC from their master recording. BBC UK edited the master in one way - and broadcast that in the UK. BBC TS edited the master differently and issued that to overseasd networks.

"Merging" the two broadcast ep[isodes back together produces a longer episode inclusive of more material than was ever broadcast in one go - but there is no knowing to what extent the "merger" recreates the the full master recording. There will inevitably be some material omitted from both UK and TS versions, and the ordering of rounds may be different from those as actually recorded. We could never have a "complete unedited" version of any episode without access to the original masters.

I think Paul Merton is good, but shouldn't be in every programme. I think all the 'anoraks' out there should have a dedicated site as to the number of emails produced by JAM fanatics. I think I have maxed out my email allocation. Only kidding! Keep up the good work and thank you for cheering me up!

James - As I'm sure you've realised, the files I posted weren't my edits of anything or indeed "an edit of two versions". In case anyone else is still puzzled - the BBC would have produced two different edits/versions from a single master recording (see my immediately preceding post). By "merging" them you get "all available" rounds in the sense of all rounds that were ever made available for broadcast. But of course there may have been other material/rounds that never made it into either BBC edit but got left on the cutting room floor.

Mat - I'm afraid that's exactly what it means. TS episodes were always shorter than the UK broadcast. It means that we're missing 3 to 5 minutes on many episodes. I would think it possible that in many (perhaps most) cases TS may have minimised the amount of work involved by simply taking the UK broadcast and removing a round or two. But as we have seen, this wasn't always the case.

Dean - Thanks. You have a phenomenal memory! But I'm beginning to wish I hadn't asked.

From a quick search it seems there are only two epiosdes with both Aimi and Patrick - #205 and #217. My copies of both are TS versions broadcast by ABC in 2006. I've just downloaded a different (lower bitrate but longer running) version (I assume the UK broadcast - runs 27m08s) of #217 and started to compare with my TS #217 (runs 24m53s).

They both start with "How To Stop Snoring", but (a) the UK version is missing Nicholas' introduction although this is in the TS version, (b) the first round is edited differently (maybe others are as well), (c) the UK version has a round "Mars" [after "Ibsen"] which is not in the TS version, (d) the TS version has a round "Geneva" [before "Ibsen"] which is not in the UK version.

The transcript on your site is not "merged" like those of the other two episodes we've come across; it is the pure UK version (ie. it includes "Mars" but does not include "Geneva"). Moreover, "Geneva" does not appear in your listing of subjects. Which makes me wonder whether this episode is indeed the one you were thinking of?

However, I suspect that this UK version is itself incomplete in that it does not have Nicholas's introduction. In fact the mp3 sounds to me like the opening music + continuity announcer have been spliced on from a different episode. If so, it would have to have been spliced on from #205 if that is indeed the only other episode with Aimi and Patrick.

So James has another complex splicing job to do if he fancies it. Meanwhile, I'm left wondering just how incomplete my own collection is - pretty much the whole of the first 10 series are from ABC broadcasts. Woe is me if I have discarded inferior quality UK broadcast encodes with the same opening rounds without realising they included round(s) not in the TS versions.

this is a very wide question. The website was built over a long period of work every weekend for seven or eight years. It is all my own research and work, listening to recordings, writing bios, compiling stats and lists etc. None of it was just copied from anyone else’s website. I’m not sure if this answers your question, if it doesn’t try again. Smile

James (and anyone else who followed my post #8358 and is interested) - I've produced an "extended" episode #217 by patching the "Mars" round from the lower quality UK version into the TS version (which has the full intro by Nicholas) and uploaded it to http://www.sendspace.com/file/au3xtp . I haven't done a word-for-word comparison to see what other differences there might be between TS and UK versions.
