I was actually meaning using Dropbox as a means of sharing files rather than as a permanent archive.

The danger of using it as an archive would be that one user might forget how it works and delete some files.

That file would then be deleted for everyone.

Dropbox is great -- though for those already using it, a shared JAM folder could seriously eat into our already tight space quotas (shared files take quota from everyone with whom the folder is shared)...

I agree that the misleading "Download" banners on Sendspace and its ilk are most aggravating, though mercifully I've never fallen prey to one.

So, yeah, some sort of closed share for the group would be great.
