Re: World Service Audio Archive

All the files I've grabbed so far have been encoded at 32kbps Mono - not the 64kbps mentioned on the About page. Examining the ID3 tags, though, does reveal quite a bit about their origin.

The MP3s have been encoded from PCM 48Khz, 16-bit Stereo WAV files that were created about five or six years ago using SADiE 5. (SADiE is a high-end Digital Audio Workstation that has been around since 1991)

If we want to get decent upgrades we really need to find Stereo recordings for every episode after 1972. At the moment, most of our archive - including all these World Service audios - are in Mono.

Now that the ABC and R4X recordings have ended it might be a good time to create a new inventory of exactly what is available to fans, including length (whether it's a 24 minute edit or the full 29 minute original broadcast), the exact source (ABC, R4, R4X, WS, etc), Mono or Stereo (including bitrates), and, of course, sound quality. Anyone want to volunteer?

Simon
