Re: World Service Audio Archive

I feel like I've been spamming the list, lately.

448 is a very, VERY interesting episode.

The two versions we have, at least the versions I have, are edited in completely different ways.  Both are censored, and both are edited for time.  The World Service version does contain an entire additional round.

We'll call the version I already have the "domestic" version for the purposes of this examination.  It's the v2, so it may be an ABC version, in actuality.  (Note: I think it is an ABC TS version, but I've already written this whole email and I'm not editing it now..)

Pauses are removed, laughter is shortened.  But it's different pauses and different laughter depending on which version you listen to.  For a while, one version is ahead, then the other version is.

The World Service version includes a cut for potential racism.  I've not listened to the context (I'm comparing waveforms in Audacity and zooming in on sections where things are different), but Clement Freud refers to a "Pugilist" in this version.  In the domestic version, Clement Freud actually says "Black pugilist".

The domestic version includes a cut of the word "Bloody" -- Tony Hawk's "Because they get a bloody post card, don't they?" becomes "Because they get a post card, don't they?".

This dialogue (courtesy of Dean's site):

PM: This is deviation, taking your family to Saigon in the middle of... Surely this is dreadful!
DN: It's true!
PM: Is it true? Oh carry on then!
NP: I don't think he'd actually got under way and got to postcards, I think they were coming up. So yes I give him the benefit of the doubt. Forty-one seconds, Derek, postcards starting now.

In the World Service edition, both Paul's "Surely this is dreadful!" and everything Nicholas says before "Forty-one seconds" has been chopped.

Again, in the World Service edition, Derek's "Piles of bricks" description of the statues from Sarajevo is lost.

In the domestic version, "God" is cut.  "If there is any deviation or hesitation or repetition that takes place on this particular programme, then God, does Nicholas Parsons knows." loses that one word.

The World Service version includes the round "Breaks", absent from the domestic version.

The Domestic version announces "So he's the winner, Paul Merton!" while the World Service version announces "So he's the winner, this week, Paul Merton!".

So, yeah.  I think I might take the domestic/ABC version, edit in all the things that were censored in that edition and the extra round from the World version, and upload that.  Thoughts?

The World Service edition of #429 is longer.

As Nicholas introduces the first round, he tells Wendy "Take it any way you wish and talk on it for 60 seconds if you can...".  This line of dialogue is missing in the copy I already have.

I assume there are other edits.  In this case, I'm taking the World Service version.  (It's longer by over a minute).

The important words here are "my collection". Everyone on this board has a collection - but I'd bet money that no two collections are the same. So what is an upgrade of episode #ABC for me may not be an upgrade for you. Conversely, an upgrade of episode #DEF for you may not be an upgrade for me. For me, the preliminary results of the first 26 episodes are:

#390 [Have BBC CD version]
#393 [Have BBC CD version]
#395 [Have BBC CD version]
#397 [POSSIBE UPGRADE]
#398 [My 32/22/m sounds better]
#424 [Have BBC7 128/44/s]
#425 [Have 160/44/s - sounds better]
#426 [My 32/22/m sounds pretty much the same]
#427 [Have ABC 2009 capture - same length and sounds better]
#428 [Have 160/44/s - sounds better]
#429 [POSSIBLY LONGER]
#430 [Have BBC7 128/44/s]
#431 [Have R4X 128/44/s]
#432 [My 32/22/m sounds pretty much the same]
#433 [Have 128/44/s - sounds better]
#435 [Have 160/44/s - sounds better]
#437 [Have 64/44/m - sounds better]
#439 [My 32/22/m sounds pretty much the same]
#440 [Have 128/44/s - sounds better]
#441 [Have BBC7 128/44/s]
#442 [POSSIBLE UPGRADE]
#444 [Have ABC 2009 capture - same length and sounds better]
#446 [Have BBC7 128/44/s]
#448 [POSSIBLY LONGER]
#449 [Have 128/44/s - sounds better]
#450 [POSSIBLY LONGER]
