Hi,

I've just got on to the World Service Audio Archive beta testing. At the moment they have 127 episodes of JAM, with the oldest one being from 1989, and the newest from 2010.

I'm not sure how the dates work, as they have an episode dated 'MON 6 JAN 1997', but it's episode #458 Robin Hood (which should be 27 January 1996). Almost a year different!

I wonder if any of the episodes are better quality versions then what we have.

Josey

I too have been exploring the World Service Audio Archive over the last couple of days.

The dates given are when the show was broadcast on BBC World Service. This would usually be 6-12 months after it was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4. No episodes of JAM ever premièred on the World Service!

Unfortunately, all episodes are heavily compressed (32kbps, 48Khz, single channel Mono) in the beta version so sound a little like they were recorded underwater. :-(

According to the About page this is because "lower quality audio reduces the costs of running the prototype which means we can include more programmes with the budget we have available".

I guess we'll have to wait a year or two for the project to go public before the files are available at a higher bitrate...

Thats amazing Josey. Grab what you can. There will no doubt be wonderful upgrades for episodes we only have muffled versions of. We already have great sounding copies of the newest ones, so I would start from oldest first.

The date is probably the date it was broadcast by World Service, which would inevitably be later than the original UK broadcast.

I would say a good 32kbps file will trump some of worst recordings we have.

Yeah, easily.

It's of course unfortunate that we don't get them in top quality, but some of our recordings - in fact, quite a few - should be possible to get *quite* the upgrade even in 32kbps. With some luck we'll get some of the worst sounding ones replaced by something that at least is listenable.

It doesn't seem to have every episode between 1989 and 2004, and as Simon said, they aren't the best quality, but they sound fine to me.

What software should I use to get them? I don't think anything I've used in the past would work because the site is password protected.

Good news is that I've found a really easy way of downloading the episodes!

Bad news is that this time I turned the speakers up this time, and the sound quality is i lot worse than I thought. It really does sound like it's under water. :(

Still might be an upgrade to some episodes, and hopefully it'll go 'public' soon and they'll improve the quality.

Each episode is only about 6.5mb! I'll email them later, and say how much it would improve the site if the sound quality was better.

Should I still download them?

I hate to complicate things even further but I've noticed many of the JAM episodes in the WS archive are uploaded twice. Once as a 5.5Mb 24 minute version and again as a 6.5Mb 29 minute version.

This became obvious quote early on when one of the first episodes I downloaded started with a different subject to the one listed in Dean's guide. It looks like this new set of recordings is going to create a whole new set of problems for us once we start cataloguing them...

I've started grabbing them, starting at the back of the archive.  The episodes I've found so far are 27 - 30 minutes long and are from series 22 and 26.

We'll see how far I get, today, as I have actual work to do, too...

It will be interesting to see which ones are actually a quality improvement over what we already have.

It sounded also like there was some hopeful text on the website, saying that the low quality versions are only temporary during beta testing to save space? I'm curious what the EXACT wording that they use is on that. I don't want to misinterpret it just because I'm excited :) I'm hoping that what definitely it is saying is that once the site proper is launched, the lo-qual versions will be replaced with something "above water". (I really can't imagine them leave bad quality sound on the proper site. Listeners/web surfers have pretty high expectations these days. Not like 15 years ago when it sometimes took 30 seconds to download a jpg.)

The quality is certainly listenable on the ones I've looked at so far, but the compression is noticeable.

I'll let you all have a listen a bit later.

Alright all, here's what I've found so far.

http://3pb.net/jam

Click the Archive folder.

Use the same username and password that Mark put on his JAM jar.

Let us know which are upgrades and which are extended.  :)

I agree with your sentiment - there are grounds for optimism here.

And here we were, just a mere week or two ago discussing the low quality of the 90s recordings and what the chances are of getting an upgrade any time soon.

This is what it says on the 'About' page:

Why can I only listen to low quality audio online and not download programmes?

Audio is available to play online as streaming 64kbps MP3s. We've chosen this format because using lower quality audio reduces the costs of running the prototype which means we can include more programmes with the budget we have available.

For the time being you can only stream audio from the website itself. This is because we're interested in seeing how much of each programme you listen to which we can't do with downloaded files. We may make downloads and podcasts available in a later iteration.

I don't see an Archive folder - just some files and "parent directory"

Weird.  It should be at the bottom, but if not, try:

That works ok - thanks. Could it be invisible because it's password protected BELOW a non-protected folder?

The quality is NOT as bad as I feared. It's certainly not as good as our 128kps files.. and does have some low bitrate artifacts... but all in all, very clear. Definitely better than what we have in many cases. I notice that 397-Keeping Baby Amused is much more muffled than the others.

I haven't A&B'd them all yet, but these sound like they will definitely be upgrades, in many cases. :)

64kbps is not bad at all! In fact, on these kind of recordings you don't need more if encoded properly. The JAMmer stream is only 64kbps - everything you hear off that stream is never more than that.

If the final downloads ends up at that rate I'm more than happy.

I think the important bit is "if encoded properly". Many of our 64kbps files are much better quality than these - I suspect it hasn't helped that they've been done at 48kHz instead of 44kHz or even 22kHz.

I've cursorily checked the oldest 26 episodes so far and (on a first pass) have only spotted two "possible upgrades". On the other hand there are three that seem noticeably longer than my ABC TS versions, so they may turn out to offer extra material or even different rounds.

Or... Simply the correct playback speed. And that in itself would be of value. Some recordings we got they sound like they are all on speed (!).

If you find a longer version of an episode that we have in better quality from the ABC, I'm happy to do the editing to add the rounds back in to the ABC version; that way, we can keep the benefits of the ABC quality.

I don't have a lot of time to do all this comparison/checking myself right now, however, so I'm relying on the group for that.  I will pull down some more episodes.

I'm finding some that are not upgrades to my collection, but I must say that I have found a good bit more than two that I prefer. For my ear, my criteria is if they sound more clear or if they are more muffled. I've found a good number that have greater clarity than what I currently had in my collection.

Espen - Time will tell, but it's hopefully not that. In 2 of these 3 cases (#448 and #450) my ABC TS encodes are 2009 broadcast captures of good quality . Admittedly the turntable might have been fast/slow when the original discs were digitised by ABC, but they sound fine. They aren't like some speeded-up encodes from old cassette tapes! The WS Archive copies should hopefully have been digitised at their correct speed. So I'm hoping that what the WS archive has is UK broadcast versions and that, as with the other examples already identified, TS edited them down shorter for distribution overseas. If so, I may get some "new" material.

All the files I've grabbed so far have been encoded at 32kbps Mono - not the 64kbps mentioned on the About page. Examining the ID3 tags, though, does reveal quite a bit about their origin.

The MP3s have been encoded from PCM 48Khz, 16-bit Stereo WAV files that were created about five or six years ago using SADiE 5. (SADiE is a high-end Digital Audio Workstation that has been around since 1991)

If we want to get decent upgrades we really need to find Stereo recordings for every episode after 1972. At the moment, most of our archive - including all these World Service audios - are in Mono.

Now that the ABC and R4X recordings have ended it might be a good time to create a new inventory of exactly what is available to fans, including length (whether it's a 24 minute edit or the full 29 minute original broadcast), the exact source (ABC, R4, R4X, WS, etc), Mono or Stereo (including bitrates), and, of course, sound quality. Anyone want to volunteer?

Simon

The important words here are "my collection". Everyone on this board has a collection - but I'd bet money that no two collections are the same. So what is an upgrade of episode #ABC for me may not be an upgrade for you. Conversely, an upgrade of episode #DEF for you may not be an upgrade for me. For me, the preliminary results of the first 26 episodes are:

#390 [Have BBC CD version]
#393 [Have BBC CD version]
#395 [Have BBC CD version]
#397 [POSSIBE UPGRADE]
#398 [My 32/22/m sounds better]
#424 [Have BBC7 128/44/s]
#425 [Have 160/44/s - sounds better]
#426 [My 32/22/m sounds pretty much the same]
#427 [Have ABC 2009 capture - same length and sounds better]
#428 [Have 160/44/s - sounds better]
#429 [POSSIBLY LONGER]
#430 [Have BBC7 128/44/s]
#431 [Have R4X 128/44/s]
#432 [My 32/22/m sounds pretty much the same]
#433 [Have 128/44/s - sounds better]

I've just added 17 more WS episodes:

451 - Dragons.mp3
452 - The Third Row in this Audience.mp3
453 - Playing the Fool.mp3
455 - The Capital of Scotland.mp3
456 - Charisma.mp3
457 - Ayr.mp3
458 - Robin Hood.mp3
459 - Castles.mp3
460 - Dracula (Big Bang Theory).mp3
462 - Goose.mp3
463 - Lindisfarne.mp3
464 - Tattoo.mp3
465 - The Scotsman.mp3
467 - Pressing the Flesh.mp3
471 - Sauce.mp3
473 - Greens.mp3
474 - Cows.mp3

Of particular note is 460.  Dean's Guide has Big Bang Theory as the first subject with Dracula as the second.  This version starts with Dracula.  Can someone download this one and do a full comparison against what we already have?  If I need to do another merged/extended mix, I shall do so here.

James - Happy to do a full comparison of #460 tomorrow (I'm on UK time). But at first blush my existing version (32/22/m, sound quality pretty similar) runs 29m22s [presumably therefore the original UK broadcast version] of which 1m46s is the opening "Big Bang" round. The World Service version runs 27m41s so the main difference may simply be the exclusion of the Big Bang round. Not sure what to make of that if correct. Perhaps WS sometimes used TS versions instead of UK versions? Or maybe WS sometimes did their own edits?

I intend to grab all 120 or so files that they have there (the count is 127, but there are some bad/duplicated links in the index).

I just have to work at it slowly as I have a hundred other things to do, too...

Hmm...

Perhaps the WS chopped that round because of religious considerations in some parts of the world?  Who knows...  hopefully I've got the same version as you at home.

I use a free application called "MediaInfo" that I got from SourceForge, available for Mac and PC. It reveals all the "hidden" tags and full specs for any audio or video file.

Those 18 are queued and uploading to http://www.sendspace.com/folder/mwcec2 . I'm off to bed now, so if it stalls it won't get sorted until tomorrow.

Of particular note is 460.  Dean's Guide has Big Bang Theory as the first subject with Dracula as the second.  This version starts with Dracula.  Can someone download this one and do a full comparison against what we already have?  If I need to do another merged/extended mix, I shall do so here.

As an experiment I decided to properly check one of the new 90's episodes. I chose episode 463 Lindisfarne because my old episode is timed at 29:30 and the new version is 28:40. That is quite a difference so I thought I'd start with that one.

I played the two episodes simultaneously and noted the difference any time an edit was made.

Here is what I found.

1) The applause has been shortened by a couple of seconds. This occurs between every round, but never during the actual round itself. The applause is not cut between the last round and the scores being read out.

2) In the 'Old Masters' round there is a very bizarre edit. At one point Derek pauses very slightly between words while he is speaking. This pause is removed. I re-listened to this bit several times and there is no mistake. The pause (of about one second) is removed. Astonishing.

3) This is the most severe edit. Graham Norton begins the 'Stout' round by talking for 15 seconds about how Gloria Hunniford is not stout. This is a direct reference to a joke Graham made earlier in the episode. The entire (and very funny) 15 second reference to Gloria is GONE.

4) The final edit is also in the 'Stout' round. Derek is talking about President Clinton at the stout factory and his voice tails off into a mumble. The mumble is shortened by a couple of seconds.

I must say that, aside from the Gloria Hunniford edit, I would never have noticed any of these cuts had I not been listening to both episodes at the same time.

I suppose we had better be careful. It could be the case that all of the episodes with shorter running times have been meddled with.

Chris.

#397 was an episode where we had a low quality version with the start chopped off, and a higher quality version that starts a few seconds into the first round.

I edited it together last year, so while the quality of the first 35 seconds or so is higher on the WS version, the remainder of the episode is considerably better on the copy I already have.

It's still on http://3pb.net/jam

The World Service edition of #429 is longer.

As Nicholas introduces the first round, he tells Wendy "Take it any way you wish and talk on it for 60 seconds if you can...".  This line of dialogue is missing in the copy I already have.

I assume there are other edits.  In this case, I'm taking the World Service version.  (It's longer by over a minute).

Well done, Inspector Chris!  It raises the issue that the deletion of  a round could affect later running gags... I'll keep my ears open for apparent non sequiturs that amuse the audience mightily but leave the listener perplexed ... it might be a sign of careless editing.

Further to your JAM forensic findings:

- My original (BBC radio?) version 1 copy of #463 is 29:30 (the announcer starts with "fancy a waltz?" which takes 2 seconds). It has the 'Gloria Hunniford is NOT stout!" intro to the 'Stout' round. [at 23:36]
- My ABC (version 2) copy is 28:51. It also also has the 'Gloria' intro to the 'Stout' round. [at 23:34]
- The World Service archive is 28:40 [and as you say, lacks the Gloria reference at 23:13]

- Comparing V1 and V2: they slipped in and out of sync for the first 10 minutes or so, but then stayed more-or-less in sync thereafter.  The extra duration of V1 was only in the play-out at the end.

I feel like I've been spamming the list, lately.

448 is a very, VERY interesting episode.

The two versions we have, at least the versions I have, are edited in completely different ways.  Both are censored, and both are edited for time.  The World Service version does contain an entire additional round.

We'll call the version I already have the "domestic" version for the purposes of this examination.  It's the v2, so it may be an ABC version, in actuality.  (Note: I think it is an ABC TS version, but I've already written this whole email and I'm not editing it now..)

Pauses are removed, laughter is shortened.  But it's different pauses and different laughter depending on which version you listen to.  For a while, one version is ahead, then the other version is.

The World Service version includes a cut for potential racism.  I've not listened to the context (I'm comparing waveforms in Audacity and zooming in on sections where things are different), but Clement Freud refers to a "Pugilist" in this version.  In the domestic version, Clement Freud actually says "Black pugilist".

The domestic version includes a cut of the word "Bloody" -- Tony Hawk's "Because they get a bloody post card, don't they?" becomes "Because they get a post card, don't they?".

This dialogue (courtesy of Dean's site):

PM: This is deviation, taking your family to Saigon in the middle of... Surely this is dreadful!
DN: It's true!
PM: Is it true? Oh carry on then!
NP: I don't think he'd actually got under way and got to postcards, I think they were coming up. So yes I give him the benefit of the doubt. Forty-one seconds, Derek, postcards starting now.

In the World Service edition, both Paul's "Surely this is dreadful!" and everything Nicholas says before "Forty-one seconds" has been chopped.

Again, in the World Service edition, Derek's "Piles of bricks" description of the statues from Sarajevo is lost.

In the domestic version, "God" is cut.  "If there is any deviation or hesitation or repetition that takes place on this particular programme, then God, does Nicholas Parsons knows." loses that one word.

The World Service version includes the round "Breaks", absent from the domestic version.

The Domestic version announces "So he's the winner, Paul Merton!" while the World Service version announces "So he's the winner, this week, Paul Merton!".

So, yeah.  I think I might take the domestic/ABC version, edit in all the things that were censored in that edition and the extra round from the World version, and upload that.  Thoughts?

Similar edits in 450, but the WS version is considerably longer.

Cataloguing this many small edits is taking away my will to live.  Does anyone else fancy doing it?

Thoughts?

Hi James. Just to confuse the issue, I've taken the slightly-better-quality #387 WS version intro and grafted it onto your high-quality remainder to produce another version (v3).
It's in my JAM jar at http://nylon.net/up.
JAM fanciers can take or leave it as they please...

And yes, I know this is all getting pretty confusing.
Perhaps if we start getting multiple surgical versions, we might need to identify them by their doctor, e.g. curry, nylon etc.?

The length of the play-out can be significant: in the original version I have, the playout [the bit after Nick's last word] is 18 seconds.
In the WS version, the playout is 33 seconds.

I haven't checked the rest of the differences between the 2 eps though.
But the quality of the recordings seems much the same, so I might also make the new WS copy my new "official" version  :-)

I thought about making this fix myself, actually, though I worried about generational degradation from constantly reencoding MP3 audio, and so was going to look for my original source files.

I'll grab your version.  Thanks!

Golly. JAM curation is becoming a full-time archaeological job.  I'm starting to miss just laughing at the funny bits!

I'll pass on restoring individual edited words (unless they're particularly juicy!), but I'll certainly take an entire missing round...

Yes, the constant re-editing will be an increasing quality-degradation factor. That's why I save everything I can as FLAC so I can edit endlessly over time.
Maybe (when storage and bandwidth become next-to-free in the future) we here should all convert to FLAC or some other lossless compressor?
I have already put all of my FLAC versions into the JAM jar on nylon.net.  You might want to grab them too, if you too are a radio surgeon.

Many MP3 players already decode FLAC (e.g. my Galaxy S3 phone, and Sansa Clip+ MP3 players), and with 32G SD cards selling for less than $1 a gigabyte, we're not short on space in our portable players any more...

I agree about the loss of joy with worrying about tiny editing differences.

For reference...
WS version playout was 42 sec.
My 22.96M Version 2 playout was 26 sec.

No idea yet where the rest of the 2 minute difference in durations  lies.

Yes, I agree with you both.. it sounds like a ton of work to catalogue and fix so many small edits. I can see salvaging things if an entire round was cut, to make a more complete version... but the amount of work that would go into "undoing" every identifiable small cut they have made would likely drive one to eyebrow-raisingly insane thoughts.

8 more World Service episodes for your downloading pleasure:

475 - Manchester.mp3
479 - Citizens.mp3
482 - The Crack.mp3
486 - Scottish Widows.mp3
497 - The Full Monty.mp3
501 - Fast Food.mp3
506 - The Gatecrasher.mp3
524 - Spice (Possible TS - 24min).mp3

Spice, as I've noted, is only 24 minutes long which leads me to conclude that it's probably missing a round.

I'm going to bed now.

Great minds and all that! I did myself a similar patch job several years ago. My rationale for assigning the WS version the "possible upgrade" tag was to flag it for my attention to use the beginning of the WS version to make a better patch.

Mark - FWIW, my BBC7 2003-11-08 copy runs 28m46s, includes Gloria Hunniford, but excludes an extended playout (probably the BBC7 continuity announcer started talking over the music - I always delete that). Your ABC recording (and a couple of other ABC recordings I have) seems to suggest that by 1995/1996 TS were simply issuing the UK broadcast version without shortening the running time.

That's what I'm thinking too. We got some (old) versions of shows that are clearly running too fast, so to get those upgraded to correct speed would be nice even if the audio quality isn't that much better.

Not necessarily, depends on what editor you use.

I use mp3DirectCut - it edits the mp3 frames directly without conversion so you don't get degradation with multiple edits.

I'll play with it.  I assume that you can only splice based on a whole MP3 frame?  That will work in some cases, but not others.

Either way, a useful tool to have!

Series 36 (Episodes 517-526) appears to be available in multiple versions on the WSRA. So far I've found FOUR different WS edits of episode 521. I'll give you the WSRA filenames so that you can grab them all yourself:

X0455945 #521 24m10s
X0455946 #521 27m59s
X0424408 #521 27m38s
X0424409 #521 23m53s

Other duplicates include:

X0425899 #523 24m02s
X0425899 #523 28m07s

X0456827 #538 27m58s
X0456828 #538 24m29s

So it appears that even recent episodes are being edited down to fit different timeslots...

I'll likely upload the longest versions that I find when I start hitting duplicates.  As of right now, I've only stumbled across one, and the shorter one was a 24 minute edit.

Hi Don. I investigated MP3DirectCut briefly, but felt it lacked precision, and I seem to remember a nasty interface.
I still have it and should give it a more considered thrashing before dismissing it.

Cheers

Not necessarily, depends on what editor you use.

I use mp3DirectCut - it edits the mp3 frames directly without conversion so you don't get degradation with multiple edits.

I thought about making this fix myself, actually, though I worried about generational degradation from constantly reencoding MP3 audio, and so was going to look for my original source files.

I'll grab your version.  Thanks!
