Topic: Searching the World Service Archive

I've discovered in looking for episodes of a particular programme that selecting its "brand" from a list of search results doesn't bring up all the available episodes of that programme. For example, search on "Frank Muir" and the first three pages of hits include 25 episodes of the programme "My Music". But select My Music's "brand-1558" link from one of those hits and you only get 5 results - whereas I would have expected selecting the "brand-1558" link to bring up at a minimum the same 25 episodes. Theoretically I would expect that the "brand-1558" link might bring up more episodes - eg. if there were episodes of that programme in which Frank Muir did not participate - but never less.

I raised this today with the chap at BBC WS who issued my invite. His reply was as follows: "Hi Charles. It looks like a bug. Thanks for noticing. We've been doing some work on search recently and it looks like things have gone out of sync. I've raised it as a bug with the development team so should get sorted soon. Thanks again. Michael."

I've been searching for additional episodes of JAM in the WSRA but can't find any that aren't included in the list of 127 links brought up when clicking on "brand-1559".

I've compiled a list of all 127 WSRA JAM IDs and added information on the episode they link to (episode number, first round name, episode length in minutes and seconds). You can grab a copy of my list in the Files section of this Yahoo group.

All the IDs start with X0 and then a six-digit number, although for some reason, whoever was adding the data for the IDs beginning X02 and X03 has added them as XO2 and XO3 (that's the letters X and O, instead of the letter X and then the number zero). Therefore these IDs appear at the bottom of the list after X09. Of the 127 links, 5 led to a page with no audio - they were trying to access X-zero-three files that don't exist! There is also one episode that isn't JAM at all, but an episode of Ned Sherrin's Counterpoint. In fact, there are about 170 episodes of Counterpoint on the WSRA so maybe one of them is actually JAM? I haven't got round to checking those yet!

Of the remaining 121 valid links, there should be 98 different episodes of JAM from 1989-2004, with the other 23 episodes being alternate edits. Now I just need to get round to listening to them all...

Simon,

I'm going to use your list to accelerate my downloading and avoid having to check every file myself.  I'll drop them in the Archive folder when I have them.

Thanks for doing this.

Still is unlikely to happen today, though..  I leave town in about two hours.
