Topic: World Service comparison update

The story so far... These episodes were deemed by me to be candidates for upgrades (though I admit I didn't compare each episodes topics, which I should do.)

437. 439. 440. 442. 460. 462. 465. 567. 471
473. 474. 482. 497. 521. 523. 524

I've finished looking at the remaining WS eps, and think these may also be worthwhile upgrades

537 Taking the waters
538 How to win...
544 Namedropping
548 The good old days
571 The man...
593 How to get...
594 Best Dressed...
595 Something to write...
596 Breaking Records [length only 25:46 compared to original's 27:52  - but it has all the same rounds - has intra-round editing happened?]
598 Shorts [length only 25:52 compared to originals's 28:00 - but has the same rounds]

Not a candidate, but the WS 609 is missing the first round 'How to matchmake', but its quality is not appreciably better than the copy we already have.

The tricky thing with episodes of this era is that sometimes the quality of the (mono) WS version may be better than our existing (stereo) version, so one had to choose between quality and audio data.

Cheers
Mark

Excellent work!

Have you found any instances where the WS edition is longer than the original that we have?

G'day James. I plan to return to your uploads and sweep through them to find time differences that may suggest an entire round (or more) might be missing or added.

But as I noted today, even a 2 - 3 minute difference between versions does not necessarily denote an entire round is missing or added.
The audio speeds sound much the same, and the playouts at the end are much the same length - which suggests subtle word-by-word editing within rounds has occurred?

But even though I'm now early-retired, I don't have time or patience enough to trawl through dozens of episodes looking for single-word edits.

If we have a keen band of similar people, maybe we can divvy up the task to save massive reinvention of the wheel - and cruelty to keyboards?

Give me a couple of years when I reach the stage where I'm yelling at birds in my back yard to shut up... I might be ready to do it then  :-)

Cheers
Mark

I definitely don't mind doing some actual full episode comparisons once the candidates are identified.  I plan on looking at some of the episodes you already noted where the times are significantly different and yet all rounds are present.  I've just got enough going on that it may not happen instantaneously.

I also plan to do some comparisons - in particular, the 5 different versions of #521, and perhaps the other episodes where 3 different versions are now available to listen to: 458, 500, 520, 523, 524, 525, 537, 538, 544, 545, 549, 550, 551, 552, 554, 559, 560, 561, 569

That should keep me busy for a while...

In fact, after spending a few days exploring the WSRA I've found several programmes marked "NOT FOR BROADCAST" and "INTERNAL USE ONLY" so it makes me wonder whether all these different edits were actually broadcast on the WS, or are they just alternate versions/early edits that have been languishing in their digital archive for the last 20 years?
