Dear all

I get the digest & while it does overcome the clutter, there is an issue with people not clipping the quotes in their replies. I am almost thinking of moving away from digest to individual mails because it is a hassle scrolling down watching the quote indents increase and then decrease to get to the next message. It can also get so long that there is some truncation. With individual mails, sorted to a folder, the collector's messages can be easily deleted

I understand the collecting impulse, but am also getting a bit overwhelmed by the desire to get slightly better recordings (I thank everyone for sharing program(me)s and haven't really found any unlistenable since the early series; and while a missing round or a reference to Nick burping is completist, it is amazing to watch.

I enjoyed the latest episode, some typical Nick assisting of the newbie; some obvious missed repetitions from the regular players which are more obvious to the relaxed listener. Nice range of 'true' and 'surreal' responses.

Hi all. Jeremy has raised a good point.

Each of us has our own reasons for being here: some are fanatical collectors, to whom every word of an episode must be carefully evaluated; some are mildly-OCD types who need to have all rounds of all episodes in toto; others just want every reasonable-quality episode in their collection; and there are those who casually like the show a lot and just want to listen to the funny bits without too much mucking about.

I am, at different times, all of these types.

For one list like this to accommodate the needs of all types of JAM fans, it has to feed each user type, so there will be posts that annoy some, delight others, and are informative to many.

I find the best strategy is to focus on the posts that supply stuff I want to know, and press DEL for those that don't, knowing they will be treasured by other subscribers.

And sometimes when my needs change, I need to re-visit the archive to find the posts I deleted to glean their unappreciated value.

We're all in the same pool. Some of us want to swim fast laps. Some want to paddle. We all need to be careful not to block the lanes with our rubber ducks, or plough into the paddlers.

But we all knew that already.

Another factor into this is that e-mail as a media is fundamentally flawed for handling multiple conversations across a larger group of people. It puts requirements on the users to be structural and systematic, and humans are neither by nature.

We would not have had any of these discussions had we used a regular web forum instead - not even if there were twice the amount of posts and users.
Now I am not suggesting that we shift arena to something more suitable - I've had bad experience with such operations in the past where the transition to a new platform basically caused the entire community to dissolve - but I think it is important for all to understand this. They need to learn "advanced use" of their e-mail client, they need to understand filtering of emails, trimming of emails, good subjects, all that (this thread is an excellent example of good topic: Anyone who are not interested in this discussion can now just delete all these mails).

We are several on this list who has a fair technical knowledge. We can assist. If there is anyone of you who would like to figure out what we mean by "mail filters" and how to use them - just ask. Supply info about what email software you use (gmail, yahoo mail, Thunderbird, Outlook, etc), and you are very likely to get a step-by-step guide in return that takes you through the entire process.

Just don't ask others to shut up just cause you can't handle it. That's not the way to go. There are others on that list who'd want *more* traffic, and your preferences are not more important than anothers.

Learn the tools. Or as we say, RTFM. ;)

For the last few weeks I have also started to seriously consider taking advantage of the wonderful better recordings this group has afforded us. My present 90's recordings are in many cases substandard and in a few cases simply unlistenable.

When I first became aware of Just A Minute I stumbled upon a whole cache of episodes someone (perhaps here in the group)had generously put out there on the web for the masses to download. Some of those recordings are somewhat subpar, but at the time I was happy simply to have them. Now that I've heard many of the offerings here, I've become a bit spoiled!

Nick seemed to be in good form in the new program, which I found gratifying. Since becoming a fan of the show I've become quite fond of his personality on the whole. I may not always agree with his decisions but I can't imagine anyone doing a better job.

I think just about all the fans will agree with this. I think if you worry too much about all the decisions you’re missing the point. Nicholas is 90 this year and if you think as I do that it’s most likely that he won’t still be in the chair for the 50th anniversary, it makes you wonder about how a new chairman will be received. There is a huge reservoir of affection for Nicholas and all his foibles, no doubt at all.

I haven’t jumped into this discussion because the points were being made without me having to intervene. I think the posts of Jeremy, nylon and Espen all made great points, points I would have made, so I won’t repeat them (except one...)

But one additional thing. Espen mentions a web forum and I agree entirely with what he said.

But just to point out that as well as a digest, we do have a web forum where all the emails are posted – ie. exactly the same as what you get on email. If you wish you can turn the emails off and choose to check in on the web once a day, once a week, whatever, read only the threads that interest you, reply there – and that reply will still get emailed out to everyone.

Also Espen’s point about making your subject header relevant is very well made.

One drawback of the Yahoo platform is that all messages are open to the entire world and can be Googled. There is no way to have a private discussion within the group.

I'm willing and able to set up a forum for this group to use, including public and private areas. Let me know if you are interested.
