We're still averaging a new member each day - just therefore a note to
welcome all of you who have joined in the past month or so. This week we
passed 100 members - far from being one of the biggest Yahoo groups but
about 95 more than I expected us to get!
I realise new members are usually attracted by the downloads - but it's
still nice for new folk to introduce themselves. Some of us used this
questionaire below to introduce ourselves - but even just a lines of
introduction would be good.
Anyway to all the newcomers - welcome - have fun - be nice! And enjoy
the shows.
1. My favourite Just a Minute panellist is.... because....
2. If I could pick four people for my best ever Just a Minute panel,
they would be... because...
3. The person/s I would like to hear more of on Just a Minute is....

4. The first time I heard Just a Minute, I thought...
5. I think if Kenneth Williams and Paul Merton had ever been on the show
together....

7. The reason I love listening to Just a Minute is...
8. If you've been to a Just a Minute recording, tell us about it!
9. If you've ever played Just a Minute yourself, tell us about it!
10. If I could meet a Just a Minute star and ask them one question, I
would want to meet..... and the question would be....
11. The Just a Minute star I most look like/act like is...
12. If I had to speak for 60 seconds on a subject without hesitation,

First point; very few people have filled out the poll on where they
come from - indeed NONE from Australasia apparently! - and as it
takes about 2 seconds it'd be nice for everyone to fill it out
as I'm very interested to see the extent of interest from outside
the Uk ..... I often wonder how much of the cultutally specific
jokes/references slip by non-Brits and how this might affect
enjoyment - though I feel a whole new topic coming on here ....
and a much more specific response to Dean's post...

I still regularly trawl WinMx looking for those elusive missing
episodes and often get people downloading from
my archive of JAM stuff (this is very useful because I can
immediately browse them back to see what they have in the way of
episodes).
I also make a point of sending a message pointing them to
this group "where links to much faster downloads are available for
around 600 episodes plus the chance to discuss topics with fellow
fans of the show if you so wish" .
However, I've often wondered if there is any down-side to this - ie.
directing people here who may only be interested in mining the
rich seams of episode download links. I also have a much visted
web site which currently has a link to your site (Dean) and advises
people that the best way to share episode recordings is to use
WinMx. I've been meaning to change this to also direct people
to this group. Is there any restrictions on a group's usage that
might be negative for example?
If you have any specific objections, as group founder and co-
ordinator and all-round number one JAM guru (whether you like
it or not, matey!) I'd be happy to follow any direction on
preferences to the ways in which people are introduced to the group.
With this is mind, I'd encourage anyone else who has control of
a web site to put in a link - the more there are the more the
search engines will help other 'lost' potential members find us.

OK then, here goes...

At the moment it has to be Paul Merton because he is so unpredictable
and as surreal as a fish on a bicycle (actually I did once see an
elephant on tricyle!!!)...

Paul Merton, Marcus Brigstocke, Peter Jones and Richard Murdoch
becuase I just think they would be so much fun together. But if you
asked me this question tomorrow or next week I would have a
completely different answer as it depends what shows I've been
listening to lately. Come to think of it I listened to some good
shows recently with Charles Collingwood. I like *most* of the people
that have been on JAM and the only person I dislike and think twice
about listening to a show if I know she is in it is Wendy Richard.
Sorry folks I just can't abide her...

From the new people on Just A Minute I would like to hear Marcus
Brigstocke become a regular, if Paul Merton is the new Kenneth
Williams then Brigstocke is surely the new Merton. Also more Charles
Collingwood please. And what is that Irish lady? I think she is
good in her rounds but perhaps she should keep her mouth a bit shut
when it isn't her round...

It was very entertaining and was waiting for the next episode all
week...

Williams would have been outshone by Merton...
>

I don't know about funniest moment *ever* but this last week I was
listening in bed to some recent episodes and in one Clement Freud was
talking about triplets and said one off them was identical - a
panelist buzzed in to say deviation as two of them had to be
identical. Nicholas just didn't get it as the panel tried to explain
to him. I nearly fell out of bed laughing...
>
> 7. The reason I love listening to Just a Minute is...
No two shows are the same, nothing is predictable unlike much comedy
on the radio which seems 'formulaic' these days...
>
> 8. If you've been to a Just a Minute recording, tell us about it!
Unfortunately not though I did have tickets to the recording in
Chester a few years back and was working teaching a night class which
I couldn't get out of so had to give them to a colleague... And I
only just found out last week that there was a recording in the
theatre (in Mold) within walking distance of my home two years back!!!
>
> 9. If you've ever played Just a Minute yourself, tell us about it!
I was first introduced to JAM by a school teacher and we played it
often in class. I went to boarding school and during my final year
the people in my dormitory would often play it of an evening too. I
was some years later that I actually heard it on the radio...

I don't think I would...

When at school I used to be able to do a good impression of Doctor
Magnus Pyke. I wouldn't call him a *star* but he did do some
episodes in the mid-1970s...

Isaan, and there's a Bonus Point for anyone who knows what Isaan is...

2) I married the most wonderful woman I haev ever met on Valentines
Day...
3) My favourite breakfast is a mug of black tea with a bowl of
steamed rice, two fried eggs, and a barbecued rat...

Nor can I . she seems to be so snotty on the show where as i think
in reality she is a bit nicer .

You must be talking about Pauline Mc Glynn . I have seen her a good
bit on tv over here being interviewed and on a game show on r.t.e
radio, not only in father ted . I think she always comes across
well . we do talk a lot , it is a national charecteristic of irish
women ( I can say that as I am one !) perhaps a bit too much for a
show like just a minute ! although I have heard other players
interrupting other players for very little reason at all !
cheers

Yes, Pauline McGlynn, that's it. I'm not familiar with her outside
of JAM as I watch little tv. I was thinking more along the lines
when another contestant buzzes in she seems to have to have her say
too. :-)
I am familiar with Irish ladies talking a lot, based in north Wales I
have spent many a pleasnt weekend (before I met my wife) drinking in
the various bars of Dublin, and eating at Thunder Road Cafe. :-)

as I said, I don't mind her talking, at least she says something as opposed to people who don't even get a chance to say anything on a subject and have the subject taken away after 5 seconds and never say anything else for the rest of the show.

Apologies for delay in replying, I have been hugely busy at work.
there are download limits - but they don't affect us really as the
actual stuff being downloaded is not posted on the yahoo group itself -
all that is there is links to downloads. So there is no problem with
getting more members.
I think it would be nice if more contributed to discussion - but we did
originally start this as a way of pooling resources and knowledge on JAM
show downloads and that's what clearly is happening!
So please go ahead and point people to the group if you wish.
best, Dean
