Hi all,

This is off topic. I hope no one minds me asking.

In about two days I'm planing on starting a website, but can't pick a
web host. As I know at least a few of you have or have had websites,
I'm wondering if you have any advice.

I'm looking for the impossible; a cheap web host with unlimited
bandwidth and space, 0% downtime, your own domain name and great
features.

There's a few websites I want to start over the next year or so, so
another good feature would be being able to host multiple sites, each
with their own domain name, without paying more.

Also, I would like to own the domain name, so that I could change host
if I wanted to without losing the URL.

Hi Josey,

As a rule, there really isn't anything like unlimited space and bandwidth,
If your site starts to get popular and starts eating up lots of bandwidth
the host will complain. Same goes with server space. If you take up to much
space they will complain. It really does boil down to what you'd be using
the space for.

If it's mainly for hosting an HTML/PHP website then it would be hard to get
on the wrong side of the host, but if you are planning on offering downloads
of MP3's in bulk then the space can easily build up and you can come undone
that way.

I think most hosts now will offer you a free domain name when signing up.

My last host, before my brother took on my sites were these guys -
http://ariotek.co.uk/ - My brother still uses them.. so I suppose by
association so do I. When I was paying for my service it was a really great
deal and the customer support is second to none. The yard stick I play by is
if I don't need to use their support then it's a good deal all round, but if
I do need them and it gets sorted quickly then it just improves the deal.

I hope I haven't put you off.

PS.. I would love to know who Mark uses as a host as his deal seems VERY
sweet.

Hi Josey. You ask a lot of a host!  

I can only speak for my host - Surpasshosting in Florida - but I think they'd all be much of  a muchness - the competition is pretty fierce in that field.

What do you call "cheap"? There are various options. 

You can get unlimited bandwidth and 1.6 GB disk space for $7 a month (on a 36 month plan).  (This plan is legacy and may not be available any more.)

This offers unlimited domains and unlimited email addresses@...

You may pay more for extras like an SSL certificate, static IP address etc - if you don't know what they are you probably don't need them anyway.

Such cheap accounts will be "shared" - your domain sits on a web server with dozens, or a hundred other users' domains. This obviously will be less speedy that having a dedicated (expensive) plan.

Guaranteed uptime for my domains is 99.9% - which means your site may be unresponsive for a few minutes every couple of months. On dedicated plans you can get 100% uptime.

Shop around and work out what's important to you.
