Whilst agreeing with all the plus points that Jeremy and Dean have made, I think that Sheila's overall demeanor is key to her success on JAM. She has always sounded as though she enjoys playing the game and is happy with her lot in life. Even on her return to the show after the death of John Thaw, it was the same old Sheila, lighting up the programme with her bonhomie.

Contrast this with Wendy Richards who never sounded happy even when talking about her cockatiel or her dog. Her tone of voice and delivery always made me think that her glass was half empty.

she’s interesting to analyse. She’s not a comedian but she is quite witty. I imagine if she had been born a generation later, she might well have got into improv as Paul and Josie did, because she’s quick witted and witty. There’s also some self-deprecation there which the audience always respond to and yet she also stands up to the men so well. She was tops at standing up to Kenneth and these days she’s just as tough when she needs to be.

I think she’s tremendous and one feels the affection the others have towards her, similar to their affection for Nicholas.

She’s so busy on stage still otherwise I’m sure she’d be on more often.

plus it was fantastic to hear Sheila again - I looked at Dean's database I was amazed to see that Sheila was in the second episode of series one - so has been involved with the show only a week (in radio time - not sure how the first ones were recorded) less than Nicholas. I knew she had been involved a long time but her longevity in JAM should also be celebrated: and even more so she is a good player - as Dean's bio says it's hard to say why she is such a success. I think perhaps because she has stood up for herself in a less aggressive manner than Wendy Richard and has a rich voice.

For me Sheila is gracious and fun in her demeanor - the other panelists seem quite happy to have her there, and she just seems to get along so well with other great players. I felt there were times you could almost hear the ice from others when Wendy was playing the game.
