I must put in a few words for Wendy: perhaps it was (adolescent) memories of Are you being served, but I always enjoy her appearances.

I think a feminist dissertation could be written about how JAM has handled women over the years and the responses to them. I find Amy difficult to take because (once you get past the voice: I heard Julie Burchill on DID & was surprised by her voice) she plays the dumb blonde and is 'played' that way by the various players.

Wendy is 'aggressive' in the same way that Clement often was, and her  repeated cries of He's doing lists again! are rather like some of Kenneth's outbursts. She was a forceful player of the game with a strong personality. A no-no for a woman, particularly then.

Other women have sat between these extremes - often the less accepted ones are the more forceful.

Nicholas also often played the common fawning uncle role that was common in that time (think leslie phillips).

It is nice as time has gone on that the balance has shifted a lot more, and the gender roles are more comfortable.
