I haven't seen it posted yet (though granted, I may have missed it), so since I was at the PC and organising files, I've upped #803.

I really think Paul has been on top of his game this season - it just seems to be Paul at or very near his peak. Last year I do feel he stepped back a bit presumably to allow others to shine. What I've been seeing of late is what I feel JAM as a whole is all about, that being, even when Paul is more aggressive, other favorites get their opportunities to shine just the same; great JAM players take the spotlight just being themselves. I do miss hearing from Steven Fry and Tony Hawks this time around, but the regulars who have appeared have all been great this season as well.

Hi All,

Many apologies for dropping the ball this week.

It's been a rather rotten week for me and my family. I'll try and get last weeks Now Show and JAM up (just for completeness on my part) as soon as possible.

I am hoping to get back on track after the weekend.

Many Thanks to James for jumping in and filling the spot.

No problem, Paul.  I hope your week picks up.

I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.  Usually I just grab your copy whenever it goes up.

Thanks for everything you do!

I hope things get better soon for your family, Paul.

BTW, if anyone is ever seeking a JAM, you'll find my collection at http://nylon.net/up, and it's usually up-to-date.
The login details are on the JAM forum (http://b9fx.com) and in the Yahoo posts archive.

Hi all,
I've been a member of the group only for a short while and I've managed to find the login details for ftp.nylon.net.
I have the filezilla server and it accepts the username when i try to login but when i enter the password it shows up as an error.(Specifically 530 login authentification failed)
Is anyone receiving similar problems or does anyone know what i'm doing wrong?

Thanks, Louise

Hi Louise.  FTP has not been enabled for the JAM jar.  The login is for HTTP only.

FTP enables leeching to a point that my domain host would soon evict me...

Mark

Mark,
Thanks for the speedy reply. I have tried again using the HTTP address but I'm still having problems. Every time I enter the login details and try to log in I am asked to enter them again. I can only assume that the username and password I am using are incorrect but I have checked them against those I found on this site and can't see what I'm doing wrong myself.
If you have any other suggestions I'm all ears, otherwise I'll just resign myself to the collection of JAM and ISIHAC episodes I've already collected :)
Thanks again,
Louise

Hi Louise. The login credentials have not changed. All I can suggest is that you read the clues again very carefully -  especially regarding lowercase and spaces.

Just received an email from the BBC JAM list with details of another six episodes being recorded in April and May. Two in Belfast, Northern Ireland and four at the Radio Theatre in London.

I've applied for mine. The rest of you have less than 7 days to submit your requests. Good luck!

When someone hacks your Yahoo account as in this case it's a pity they don't keep your contact list secret.

"WhiteLabelDating.com is the simplest, easiest, best way to break into the dating industry."

How's that working out for you ?

I have been compromised twice in the last month with different passwords, one is 18 characters and 4 numbers mixed!!!!!

Not sure if its yahoo or my iphone thats opening the door.  But antivirus/malware/spam/addblock all running and no signs......very very odd, so dont blame members until we now how its working.

They don't need to hack your account. They have likely just made a bot that parses the web interfaces of the Yahoo mailing lists and use the sender addresses in the "from" field when spamming the recipients.

Yahoo really is an institution that should just die. They are running their services on a technical solutions that should be left behind sometime during the last century.

Awful Party was actually Episode 7 of the most recent series.

You'll find all 8 episodes PLUS video-clips from Episodes 1 and 8 here:

Topic: Ian Mesiter questions

Message 42 / 100

Hi all,

I just found and joined this group, thanks to a member here. JAM is one of
my favorite BBC shows. I also like Many a Slip and have great respect for
Ian Mesiter. Biographical information about him is lacking except the very
basic details.

I have a few questions. Did Ian Mesiter speak on any JAM shows other than
1977-01-12 and 1977-04-27? For those who haven't heard those shows, I
highly recommend them, especially the first. There were some early shows in
which Nicholas Parsons wasn't the chairman, but 1977-01-12 was the only show
in which Ian Mesiter was, for that one episode only. I can sometimes hear
him saying something in the background on some shows, but he doesn't
actually say much.

What other radio shows did Ian Mesiter create besides JAM and Many a Slip?
I've done some research and apparently he created other panel shows, but I
haven't found any definitive list. He also apparently created a comedy, but
I can't find it anywhere.

Finally, do any of you have a complete set of Many a Slip out there? I am
missing about half and what I have is mostly ABC rebroadcasts. For some
reason, some of the ABC shows run 25 minutes with music fill, so I'm sure
they're cutting some part of the shows, but I don't know what. Also, at
least the final 1979 series was done in stereo. I like it almost as much as
JAM. On an unrelated note, I'm looking for Quote, Unquote as well.

Thanks for any help and other interesting information this group can offer.

Check the entry for Ian Messiter on the Just a Minute website that is managed by our 'heroic leader' Dean.
It says he appeared four times, full details can be found at...

http://just-a-minute.info/who7.html > Ian Messiter

"JAM Appearances: Four including one as chairman on radio in 1977, one as a panellist on radio in 1982, one as a guest speaker in one round in 1977, and one on the Silver Minutes compilation special."

Other shows?
Wikipedia is your friend...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Messiter

Actually, there is a much better list of programmes that he has been involved with at The IMDB - Internet Movie Database (it now does more than just Movies)...

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0582232/

As ever, Google is your friend - even if you spell his name incorrectly as it happens.

the book Delmelza mentions is well worth reading if you’re interested in Ian’s life.

Ian was a panellist on a show in 1982 – ep 304/15/3 on 6 February 1982. An as you say, you can hear him in the background on other shows.

other shows created by Ian – One Minute Please, Fair Deal, Lucky 13, Leave Your Name and Number, and False Evidence. Also a chat show – a radio version of The View or Loose Women called Petticoat Lane.

The comedy was Mr Drake’s Duck.

He also produced Twenty Questions for a long time (but didn’t create it).

cheers

Dean

Yes, I saw Messiter's book. I'm totally blind, so I can't read regular
print. Is it available as an ebook? I would consider buying it if it's in
an electronic format that I can read.

Yes, I saw Messiter's book. I'm totally blind, so I can't read regular
print. Is it available as an ebook? I would consider buying it if it's in
an electronic format that I can read.

Hi All,

I have uploaded the latest episodes of The Unbelievable Truth & News Quiz
Extra.

I now have my SendSpace account back so downloads should be painless and
direct. Hopefully no more disruptions to service.

Here are the folder links:

The Unbelievable Truth - http://www.sendspace.com/folder/pffmam
News Quiz Extra - http://www.sendspace.com/folder/4lkauz

Since the regular News Quiz show very rarely got above 4 downloads, I have
decided not to upload that unless there is a call for it.

The News Quiz has the "Take a listen to this" rounds.  I think some of the musical clues may have been cut in the past.

Again, I'd need someone to confirm.

The Now Show has definitely been edited before.  I've seen confirmation of this.

Thanks for TUT. I've never heard that series before. I suspect the
reason why NQ isn't more popular is because it's easily available from
other sources. I think it's also released as a weekly podcast. I'm not
into NQ, but I have a bunch of them.

I've been inside the Radio Theatre at Broadcasting House a couple of times recently. They didn't ask me to remove my shoes or belt but it is a bit like entering an airport lounge. They have metal scanners, an X-ray scanner for bags and plenty of visible security guards.

Do they have any extra material which gets edited out of the broadcasts?
Sometimes it sounds like they cut something when I listen. I know sometimes
they let the panelist talk for more than a minute and I wonder if they
shorten it. I'm also wondering how NP knows exactly when it's time for the
final round. Do they record two shows at a time or do they make you get two
separate sets of tickets? I know that with American audience shows, they
have a warmup and often an aftershow or some other material just for the
audience. I also know that with apparently "live" shows like You Bet Your
Life with Groucho Marx, they recorded a 60 minute show which they cut down
to 30 minutes.

On a different subject, I'm surprised that NP is still the chairman. He
outlived all of the original four and doesn't sound nearly as old as he is.
I wonder if they'll end JAM after he isn't able to do the show anymore. I
can't imagine who could replace him after over 45 years.

I'm sure there's a few bits of material that's edited out here and there.  They do do "re-takes" of certain bits when the recording's not worked.  They've got the producers listening in the back, and like a number of panel shows they need to get some extra bits at the end.

He's also got his earpiece in, so he gets told they've got their time filled, so he's given the nod for the final round.

As for two shows at a time ... they do it quite often.  Mostly?
In fact, there's a wonderful reference to an episode in Chester with Steven Frost and Graham Norton where they were "invited back" but that was because they had just recorded the first episode just beforehand.   And I think the second one came out first. :P

As far as I know a lot, if not all, of the BBC quiz/panel shows are recorded 2 at a time.
They do mix the order up so that both episodes are not run consecutively or even in order of recording.

Do they have any extra material which gets edited out of the broadcasts?

Yes, they usually record 40-45 minutes per show.

Do they record two shows at a time or do they make you get two
separate sets of tickets?

they always record two shows at a time and you can sit through both, except at Edinburgh when they bring a different audience in for the second show.

On what George wrote, at the shows I’ve seen it’s the scorer who has the earpiece and is in contact with the producer, and she oasses messages to Nicholas, like “last round”.

It does seem when you listen that they do 2 at one location, with the same panel, except in Edinburgh where they seem to have two regulars (seems like Paul, Giles, Jenny, Sue, Alan C, ) plus rope in people who are performing in their own shows up there for one programme each.

They do seem to mostly stick to broadcasting the first episode of a pair before the second episode, even if they shuffle the shows up. With ISIHAC they usually seem to broadcast the shows recorded in a session consecutively.

I think when you apply for tickets it's made clear to you how many episodes you will see being recorded.

I mean this is my impression, I've not studied the episode lists...

Hello all,

I realize that this is off topic, but someone suggested that I ask here.
I'm looking for BBC quiz programs. I have some episodes of Trivia Test
Match, but I'm looking for Round Britain Quiz from 1947 to 2008 as I appear
to have 2009 to 2012 already. I am in the US and it doesn't seem to be
available on the BBC site. It might have also been known as Transatlantic
Quiz. I'm interested in collecting quiz and trivia programs. I'm also
interested in any other panel games such as My Word, My Music, Many a Slip
(I have about half of those), and Quote, Unquote series 1-47 (I have 48
already).

I'm sure this group already knows about this, but I have an episode of
Desert Island Discs with NP. It is not the podcast version and appears to
be 128 K stereo. I haven't listened to it yet.

Topic: Last night's recording

Message 78 / 100

I thought I'd post an update after I was fortunate enough to get tickets for last night's recording for the next series.

It was at Broadcasting House in the Radio Theatre, but so much has changed there that it's worth letting everyone know. Audiences used to queue along Regent Street from the old doors at BH, and an audience services bod would walk along the queue putting a sticker on your ticket so the earlier you arrived the lower your number. Then you were directed to a small holding room, with a tiny bar, where you waited for about an hour then you were ushered into the theatre for the show.

Now you enter through a door further up Regent Street into the brand new part of the building, you go through security, putting bags and coats through the airport style scanner, you are scanned with a hand held scanner, then you go and sit in the newly opened Media Cafe, a large area with big cafe bar, a few seats, photos of famous BBC stars past and present, and a very realistic TARDIS. (Just about everyone tried the door, and had their photo taken with it!)

An audience services bod arrives at about 6-ish and then puts stickers on everyone's tickets, regardless of whether they'd been waiting for two hours or had just arrived. This of course leads to a scrum of pushing and shoving, and elbows in the face from people desperate to get their low number. All rather shameful, and it could be avoided if the security people put the stickers on as people arrived. Much fairer. Then of course we are ushered in the theatre doors opposite the cafe for the show.

(For those new members who have recently asked about how the show is done, well they record two shows. They do record more rounds than are broadcast, last night's episodes ran at 40 minuted start to finish, and during the first show they recorded ten rounds, for the second eleven. The set-up is just like it was for the last TV series, with Nick in the middle, his whistle blower (Trudi Stevens) sitting to his right, and two players on either side.

last night's panel was from left to right, Paul Merton, Pam Ayres, Kevin Eldon and Graham Norton. The first show started at Paul and went left to right with the subjects, and the second show did the reverse.)

Graham was on good form, Kevin tried hard and was amusing, but I think still overawed by the others. Pam was charming as usual, and Paul was Paul. They never stop the recording and run straight through, except for obvious pauses where Nick needs to blow his nose or has a cough, but sometimes even those are left in!

Nick was still as good as ever, although there were a few more stumbles over words, but then who cares?! The producer was new, a Katy 'something', who seemed very personable and in control of the show. It wasn't a classic edition by any means, but was funny, and of course still a legendary BBC show.

Any questions feel free to ask!

Hi,

Thanks for letting us know about this. I was asking how the recording was
done because I'm in the US and it's unlikely that I'll actually get to go to
one, but I'm hoping to one of these days. I assume the recording you went
to was for series #66. Did they tell you when it would be broadcast? Do
they have a break between shows? I would assume the panelists would at
least need water or something.

Could you tell if it's really unscripted? I know they're supposed to talk
on any subject without prior knowledge for a minute, but since you actually
saw it live, I have to ask if there is a script or some other written
material other than the cards with the subjects on them. Does Nicholas look
like he's in good shape? I only ask because of his age. I noticed in
recent series that sometimes he has a harder time than he used to reading
the subjects.

Your post was very interesting and informative. I really hope I can go to a
recording session one of these days.

If it’s with the same panel, they go into the second show pretty much right away.

“I would assume the panelists would at least need water or something.”

They all have water jugs in front of them.

“Could you tell if it's really unscripted?”

It is unscripted. The panellists can see the subjects before the show and some scribble a few notes but it’s just that – a few notes.

“”Does Nicholas look like he's in good shape?”

Nicholas is in good shape for man who turns 90 this year. But he certainly looks old and slightly frail these days.

Thanks for the informative posts, Stephen.

I've been trying to get tickets to JAM for a couple of years now without success. I've been to a couple of other shows at the Radio Theatre and even managed to get front row seats at one of them. I would like to see JAM, though, while Nicholas is still around.

They seem to be videoing the shows as well, as recordings from various radio shows often turn up on the BBC website. In fact, there are three video clips from the last series - two from Episode 1 and one from Episode 8. It's the same panel and they're all wearing the same clothes so those two episodes were obviously recorded at the same time too! For those who us who haven't been to a recording, they're well worth watching. If you're interested, I've uploaded the clips as MP4s in my Series 65 folder:

http://www.mediafire.com/?l81g8fxfppta8

Unless it's a highly topical show, most Radio 4 series are recorded a month or two before broadcast so we can probably expect Series 66 of JAM to start around June...

They do record the shows one after the other with no break, but the running time of each episode is about 40 minutes so its not a long evening for them. They do have a full bottle of mineral water on the desk in front of them, so do drink throughout the show. I think it is unscripted and think it always has been, as the panellists usually write down the subject as Nick gives it to them on pads for this. The subjects can be moveable things, because I get the feeling that the last subject of show two was given to Pam because of comments she'd made earlier about one of her more famous poems about teeth!!

Nick looks good for his age, what else can I say? You do have to make allowances for that! They didn't seem to know when it would broadcast.

Indeed I seem to remember years ago Clement was having a bad attack of cramp during the show, and voila! Later that episode the subject of "Cramp" was on the card...

Actually, with simonbkelly's magnificent online JAM database, I can tell you that it was S05E06 (#69) from 13 October 1970... the third last round!

Actually, with simonbkelly's magnificent online JAM database, I can tell you that it was S05E06 (#69) from 13 October 1970... the third last round!

Go to http://tvrdb.com/jam/ for all your JAM stats.

Until now I wasn’t aware of this. I must congratulate Simon on a great job – the pictures are a wonderful effort and must have taken a lot of time to get. Well done.

I guess I think it’s a bit of a shame we didn’t collaborate on improving the just-a-minute.info site, but there we are.

Anyway, excellent work Simon.

I would say though, perhaps slightly immodestly, that there is still a greater range of stats on my site.

cheers

Dean

Yes, well with respect to Simon, Dean's site is the first and the best, and where I will go with any JAM query that I have. Keep up the good work Dean!

Hello all,

BBC2 have just finished a repeat of the first episode of the "new" JaM TV. According to the programme information it's on at 12:30 each Saturday until they've shown them all. It should shortly be available on iPlayer at http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01fbk47/Just_a_Minute_Episode_1/ - most likely only for people in the UK though.

Cheers

I love you, Mark, and would like to bear your children.

I'm now going to spend a happy hour or two filling in the gaps in my TUT collection.

Matt
