my latest blog post follows...

In a few hours time JAM will be back for a six show season.

The first show features Paul Merton, Graham Norton, Pam Ayres and Kevin Eldon.

The other recordings feature Paul, Gyles Brandreth, Richard Herring and Russell Kane, and a recording at Derry features Gyles, Tony Hawks, Fred MacAulay and Roy Walker.

Richard was called in at short notice and
has again blogged about the experience. As noted in the past, he clearly loves doing the show.
But I got a call at about 2pm asking if I would fill in for a last minute drop out on Just a Minute. That's not a show that you need to be mentally sharp on, right? Having a hangover would almost certainly make me better at it. I do love this programme and am always thrilled to be asked to do it, so I couldn't really turn it down. I'd have to chance it and hope that the adrenaline would get me through. As a side note I am almost certain that I got this offer because I was in people's minds after the Sony awards and if so that means that I clawed back a bit more of the money that I'd spent to be there. My biggest failing in my career is my inability to and embarrassment at networking. But possibly by being affable and happy last night (due to being pissed) or even just by being present and reminding people I existed I had done myself a favour. Rebecca Front got cast in Time Gentlemen Please after we'd been struggling to think of someone to be Ms Jackson when I bumped into her in a bakers and realised that she'd be perfect. I don't know if she hangs around bakers deliberately, knowing that writers love eating pastry. By the amount she is on TV I am guessing that she must.

So within a matter of hours I was heading into town to compete against Paul Merton, Gyles Brandreth and Russell Kane. I didn't have time to get nervous or really to practice the game. I was just going to throw myself into it and hope for the best. And maybe the lack of nerves was a good thing. I had a terrific time tonight. I still made plenty of unforced errors (but the game would be rubbish if everyone was as good at this as Paul) but managed a few impressive flurries and more importantly got a few laughs. As intimidating as it always is to be sitting next to Paul Merton (I really wanted to ask him if he'd do a RHLSTP but I was too shy), it is also a wonderful thrill to be riffing with him and he was in a skittish and fun mood. And as competitive as he can be (or appear to be, it's all part of the game) he is also very generous on this programme, giving other people the space and time to do things. I almost totally forgot about the hangover and just enjoyed being a part of what is the funniest radio programme in the history of radio programmes. It's only Tuesday and it's already been a brilliant week!
And I managed to get a wanking joke in, so I am happy. The two programmes we recorded tonight will be broadcast in June.
Does anyone else find it kinda funny that he would be so intimidated by Paul that he wouldn't ask him if he'd appear on his podcast?

Anyway I'm enjoying hearing Richard on the show.

I know the producers booked Russell Kane last series but he pulled out so I am very pleased they didn't give up on him. His only previous appearance was in the Edinburgh Festival at 2011 when I was in the audience , when amazingly enough, he won on debut beating the not inconsiderable pairing of Paul and Gyles. But he wasn't just naturally fluent and competitive, he was also very funny. I've watched out for him since and find him hillarious. I suspect he doesn't want to do too much in the way of panel shows as he doesn't seem to do many.

Roy Walker is a newcomer - he's a game show host and comedian in Ireland. Will be nice to have another Irish voice on the programme. Anyone else think Graham Norton should have gone over for the recording?

Fred MacAulay returns after a three year absence. He's been appearing on the show since 1996, but has only done 14 shows. I always feel like he's promising without ever showing us the promise. He's quick witted and funny, but maybe this isn't the game for him? Tony and Gyles will have to be at their best if the shows are to work.

In other news I see Paul is writing an autobiography. That promises to be worth reading.

And JAM has a new producer - Katie Tyrrell. She seems to be working with Tilusha Ghelani. Katie's worked on many other BBC radio comedy programmes, and has now moved to the best of them.

Í guess this means we are saying good-bye to Claire Jones, who produced the show from 2000 to 2006 and has shared the reins with Tilusha for the past few years. Claire has returned before and she has her own place in JAM history with more shows produced by her than any other producer. I think she has done an outstanding show moving the show on after the losses of Derek Nimmo, Peter Jones and Clement Freud. Still tis always good to have a new perspective. I wish Katie all the very best.

I'm a bit behind on the website but am going to make an effort to update it over the next few weeks. I have 22 shows to transcribe - soon it will be 28. So I'll try and get on with it. Truth is I have been seriously thinking of pulling down the website. Have been feeling as if maybe the site's time has come and gone.

The site is 14 this month. That's old for a fansite as they're called. And I'm a bit over the rude and sometimes offensive nature of much of the email traffic I get.

But traffic has been big by the website standards - bigger than ever before. And last series anyway, the show itself also seemed better then ever. So I'll keep going and hope I get a renewed burst of enthusiasm.

An updated list of appearances since the death of Clement... there have now been 104 shows recorded. (including the 10 TV shows) Newcomers are bolded.

Dean- just want to say I appreciate all the Online work you have done over the years- if you do take down that site give us a heads up please.
I have 'managed' a small usa Soap Opera site for nearly 10 yrs so I have a bit of an idea of what it takes to run a Fan site- it can be Hard Work but things like Transcribing is Above & Beyond any thing I have done on mine so my Hat is Off to you! Miriam

Hi,

Please keep the site up. I can possibly provide free web hosting if
necessary, but your site is a valuable resource and I really don't want to
see it die. Interestingly, when looking on Google for information about Ian
Messiter, your site was mentioned in passing, but neither you nor the site
were credited. I would have to find the link to the newspaper article
again, but it was a behind the scenes look at JAM. It showed up in the
first page of Google results.

If you really feel that you've had enough of the site and it's time to take
it down, please at least put up a static archive somewhere for download. I
really would like a local copy of the site for random browsing. I must
admit that the transcripts aren't of a lot of use to me since I would rather
hear the audio, but you're making it possible for the deaf to indirectly
enjoy JAM and they wouldn't be able to otherwise. They're also helpful when
trying to refresh your memory of a particular episode. I didn't really feel
like hearing the episodes from India again, but it was nice reading the
transcripts. Another valuable resource is the Who's Who pages. It's nice
to know exactly when someone made an appearance. Because of you, I
purposely sought out S61E04 so I could hear Russel.

The only negative thing I would say is that I wish I would have found your
site a lot sooner. I've been interested in the show for a long time and
only had a small number of episodes. If you can believe it, I thought the
show died around 1980 or so because I had no further information. Now I
find out that it's still going strong and you put together a really nice fan
site besides. I wish it had better search engine rankings, but I didn't
bother to look on Google because I didn't think the show was still around.
It's a real shame that the BBC shows aren't easier to find in the US. I
don't think an American version of JAM would go over very well, but it would
be interesting.

If you do decide to take the site down, please contact me off-list to work
out some hosting arrangement or a static archive for download. Your site
doesn't deserve to be forgotten like so many others. Regardless, thank you
for creating and maintaining it over the years!

Dean, I'd like to echo the thoughts of others, here.

I refer to your site constantly.  It's incredibly useful.  Even the transcripts are of much use to me, particularly when I'm trying to figure out these World Service recordings, or even if I'm just trying to remember which episode a specific moment occured in.

Honestly, my fandom of Just a Minute wouldn't be near as rabid, nor my knowledge or collection as complete, without your site.  I'm hoping it's there for the long run!

I offer a lot of praise to those people who bring us new recordings week in, and week out.  You've been consistently tireless and yet quiet about your own efforts, which are equally valuable.  They are noticed, and they are appreciated.  Thank you for your work over the last 14 years.

Hi Dean. It certainly would be a jammy tragedy if your site were not to be there to be the sine non qua of JAM academia.
I know the strain of maintaining a complex personal website, and the temptation to pack it in (mine has been growing since 1996), but if the urge to drink margaritas in the sun does overwhelm you  I know there are some very clever people on this list who could help you out with transcriptions, site maintenance/redesign, perhaps including the JAM database into your site. I'd be happy to give you the JAM forum to help alleviate the limitations of Yahoo Groups.

Have a think.

Regards
Mark

Dean - as other have stated, it would be a huge loss to the JAM community if your site were not available for new enthusiasts such as myself to mine for so many troves of Just A Minute treasures. I can certainly understand if you are 'over it' so to speak, and want to close that chapter of your life as I'm sure the work involved is immense. Hopefully you know that many of us are out here accessing your work with nothing but kind words to say about what you've managed to accomplish.

I can only chime in and say that your site is *essential* as a reference for anything JAM. It really is an excellent tool. If it is a lot of work then maybe cut down on the content to make it easier to maintain, but if you ever decide to shut it down then please make the site available for us to get a copy to browse locally.

But I got one question:

To all those who have requested an offline version of the site, there are plenty of free apps that will download a complete copy of the site for you to browse offline within a few seconds (depending on your connection speed).

I'm on a Mac and use a program called SiteSucker, although there are plenty of similar alternatives for other platforms. I was able to get a copy of all 918 HTML pages and the 80 images on Dean's site within a few seconds. It even generated a log file listing the dead links that exist on some of the pages. The entire site zips up at just 10Mb without images or 17Mb with images.

There are also several "copies" of Dean's site available in internet archives such as reocities, oocities and the Wayback Machine so it will always exist online in one form or another.

What I'd like to see is a hard copy of all the facts and figures that can be referred to when necessary. Whether it could include all the transcripts, though, is another matter, as they would take up a few thousand pages by themselves!

Maybe a book similar to "The Clue Bible" (telling the story of "I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue"), written by Jem Roberts, that includes lots of excerpts from the shows and tells the complete story from conception to the present day (or at least to 2009 when it was published).

I'm sure a JAM Bible would be just as popular and is something I'd like to see in readiness for the 50th anniversary celebrations in 2017.

Simon

Can you post the zip file of the site somewhere for download? It would save
reinventing the wheel and downloading everything again when you have already
downloaded everything. I would be happy to host the zip for others to
download. I can download my own copy with wget, but it would be better to
save the bandwidth.

I was able to get a copy of all 918 HTML pages and the 80 images on Dean's site within a few seconds. It even generated a log file listing the dead links that exist on some of the pages. The entire site zips up at just 10Mb without images or 17Mb with images.

thanks to everyone who said nice things about the website. I do appreciate it very much.

I was really trying to explain why I’d got so behind on transcribing, but I guess the emphasis came out wrong. It isn’t my intention to take the site down. My only point was that it can be hard to keep motivated after such a long time. I have done two fresh transcripts in the past week though so I am going to work away at it for a few weeks and see if I can get them all done.

As I think someone else said, even if I did give up the Yahoo site, nothing really ever goes away on the Internet.

On those offering to help, I am always grateful to anyone who wants to help. Best thing is to write to me off-list, either dbedford@... or dean@... will reach me.

thanks again for the support, as I said, it’s very much appreciated.
