Topic: This week's new episode

I've listened to a show in the week it was broadcast.  This is unprecedented.

I thought this week's show was strong, though short of classic.

Everyone was good, Gyles in particular was on-form.  Newcomer Patrick Kielty impressed for a first-timer, though seemed to get more help from Nicholas than most first-time players.

I would have liked to have seen another veteran, if not Paul Merton then perhaps Graham Norton on this panel, rather than two inexperienced hands.  However, it's perhaps funny to think of Alun Cochrane as new, as I suppose he's done a dozen shows now.

But honestly, there was plenty to keep me laughing and smiling in this episode, and I'm always happy when the show is back on the air.  Particularly as this season should carry me nicely through to October when the harsh Texas weather starts cooling and I can start attending hockey games again...

Good to have Tony back as he adds a lot when on. A good show overall with Gyles and Nick being on top form as well I thought. I do think however that for JaM to be near its best it needs at least 3 of the older regulars on the panel as otherwise it can become a two player game with the others becoming quite quiet as the show goes on. Its difficult tho as you also have to ensure new blood is coming thru, Richard Herring being one of the more recent successful additions (and the one who comes first to mind).

With three regulars on a show, I think there's plenty of scope for new blood to fill that fourth chair; look at the early years of the show where they developed a rotation of players in that fourth show, many of which went on to have long JAM careers.

I thought it was a pretty good show. These days shows without Paul Merton usually don’t go really well. This oen wasn’t a top quality show, but it was better than most of the recent non-Paul shows.

Alun Cochrane is always okay but doesn’t get involved enough. Patrick Kielty started well but faded a bit. Tony Hawks – I don’t know, I just feel he isn’t as good a player as he was 10 years ago. It was Gyles who was the real star. There’s a good example at the very beginning of the show. Tony starts the first subject and is meandering really and the audience isn’t responding. Gyles takes over and within seconds people are roaring with laughter. It would have been a very poor show without him. And he never resorts to the old rhymes any more. I reckon Gyles is getting better and better. I won’t be surprised at all if he is brought back for the last recording of this series in early September.

It looks like Gyles WILL be at the recording on September 6th:

The other guests are Paul, Pam and one more to be confirmed...

and Pam Ayres too! I bet they are trying for Graham Norton as the last panellist. Interesting they are doing a Christmas show. Maybe they will do three shows at this recording? Or this season will be just seven shows...

I also think Gyles is getting better and better at the game, and after Paul seems to be on the show with the most frequency each season. I have noticed that Paul and Tony haven't been on the same panel in a few years now, with the exception of the two 2012 TV shows. I also agree (and have stated such before) that three regulars and one relative newcomer makes for far better entertainment than two regulars and two newcomers. Here's hoping that the Sept. 6th recording includes a fourth regular rather than a green player.

I know it's been discussed that Greg Proops just doesn't seem to be a good fit for the format, but I have liked his contributions more than many of the newbies and he has become a familiar voice over the course of time; I'm glad he's making an appearance this series. Alun Cochrane seems to be a player I am beginning to like whenever he appears. Has anyone else noticed that no new female players have been given an opportunity to break into the JAM lineup for the last few years?

Yes it’s a good point.

Ruth Jones made her only appearance in the TV series only last year.

The most recent woman to debut on the radio version of JAM was Fi Glover – more than two years ago.

Prior to that, you have to go back to the one-off appearances of Josie Long and Suki Webster in 2009.

The last woman to debut and do well enough to get asked back again was Shappi Khorsandi in 2008.

And in turn, good point by you Dean - I had forgotten about Ruth Jones' TV appearance last year. Honestly, I'm hearing some recent male auditioners for the panel that seem neither funny nor endearing when they speak - it's been very hit and miss in my opinion. If nothing else, I'd like to hear a few new women get the opportunity.

I've heard women comedians say that these sort of panel shows are too aggressive for their tastes. It would have been especially true when Clement, Kenneth and Derek were present.
Nicholas does try to grease the wheels of new players, but unfortunately when it comes to women he just sounds like he's trying to seduce them.

Brrrr.  Now that left a nasty mental picture.
