595 - Something to Write Home About - a New Edit

Finally!  This is the last episode on my list to compare, and as such, this is the last new edit that you shall see from me.  Unless, of course, we discover some new recordings of old episodes, or we identify another show with multiple edits.

The version I had in my collection (and I assume you have in yours) is a 32kbps/11khz file, that sounds pretty muddy to my ear, with the World Service version sounding much clearer.  I'll warn you right now though, the 11khz version was in stereo, so if you replace it with this version, you'll gain some quality but lose the stereo.

I've made a new edit from the World Service version, with three bits edited in from the original encoding.  It's in the usual place.

The boring details

The version already in the collection played 3.92% slower than the World Service encode.  Even after adjusting for this, over a minute had been cut out!  The three edits are all from the end of the show, one right before the last round, one during the last round, and one in Nicholas' closing remarks.  Poor Ian Messiter doesn't get a shout-out in the World Sevice version edit!

Edit 1:

NP: unfortunately she's still in fourth place. But we're moving into the final round, so I'm sure you'd like to know the state of play as we do that. Jenny is just trailing a little in fourth place, but she's not very far behind Ross Noble, um, she's um a few points behind Tony Hawks and they're all a point or two behind Clement Freud who is still in the lead.

Edit 2:

NP: Twenty-six seconds Tony for you on my early years starting now.

TH: My early years were largely spent recycling! But I don't want to go into that now, because Alison Wilcox once again crops up. The saga in the playground, unfit...

BUZZ

NP: Ross challenged.

RN: Sorry, I had a flashback there, and I heard playground and thought I'm buzzing that! It's an incorrect challenge, I'm very sorry, I thought we'd slipped through time!

NP: That's right! No, it was, the playground was in another round, Alison... so was Alison in another round. In fact she was in two other rounds.

RN: I certainly hope he got it in with her! Because he's been nothing, if not persistent!

NP: Tony you were interrupted, it wasn't a good challenge. You get a point for that of course

Edit 3:

NP: I thank Janet Staplehurst for helping me with the score, and blowing her whistle so magnificently. We also thank our producer-director, Claire Jones. And also we are indebted to Ian Messiter who thought of this game which we all love playing.

And that's it!  I get to merge my collection back together, finally.  This World Service stuff has been a project.
