Topic: 595 - Something to Write Home About - a New Edit

Finally!  This is the last episode on my list to compare, and as such, this is the last new edit that you shall see from me.  Unless, of course, we discover some new recordings of old episodes, or we identify another show with multiple edits.

The version I had in my collection (and I assume you have in yours) is a 32kbps/11khz file, that sounds pretty muddy to my ear, with the World Service version sounding much clearer.  I'll warn you right now though, the 11khz version was in stereo, so if you replace it with this version, you'll gain some quality but lose the stereo.

I've made a new edit from the World Service version, with three bits edited in from the original encoding.  It's in the usual place.

The boring details

The version already in the collection played 3.92% slower than the World Service encode.  Even after adjusting for this, over a minute had been cut out!  The three edits are all from the end of the show, one right before the last round, one during the last round, and one in Nicholas' closing remarks.  Poor Ian Messiter doesn't get a shout-out in the World Sevice version edit!

Edit 1:

NP: unfortunately she's still in fourth place. But we're moving into the final round, so I'm sure you'd like to know the state of play as we do that. Jenny is just trailing a little in fourth place, but she's not very far behind Ross Noble, um, she's um a few points behind Tony Hawks and they're all a point or two behind Clement Freud who is still in the lead.

Edit 2:

NP: Twenty-six seconds Tony for you on my early years starting now.

TH: My early years were largely spent recycling! But I don't want to go into that now, because Alison Wilcox once again crops up. The saga in the playground, unfit...

BUZZ

NP: Ross challenged.

RN: Sorry, I had a flashback there, and I heard playground and thought I'm buzzing that! It's an incorrect challenge, I'm very sorry, I thought we'd slipped through time!

NP: That's right! No, it was, the playground was in another round, Alison... so was Alison in another round. In fact she was in two other rounds.

RN: I certainly hope he got it in with her! Because he's been nothing, if not persistent!

NP: Tony you were interrupted, it wasn't a good challenge. You get a point for that of course

Edit 3:

NP: I thank Janet Staplehurst for helping me with the score, and blowing her whistle so magnificently. We also thank our producer-director, Claire Jones. And also we are indebted to Ian Messiter who thought of this game which we all love playing.

And that's it!  I get to merge my collection back together, finally.  This World Service stuff has been a project.

Where is the usual place please?

Also the site I have been using to get the latest episode recordings is now giving me an error when I tried to catch up with the current series. Is there a single place to find the latest episodes? (I record them myself using Audacity but they never come out as well as the ones members post for some reason.)

Thanks for any help given.

Hi Oz,

I'm afraid this won't be much help to you but someone (I assume the BBC) seems to be having a bit of a crackdown on the sharing of (current) recordings. It's presumably because they're now selling individual episodes at £0.99 each (see http://www.audiogo.com/uk/catalogsearch/result/?q=just+a+minute).

People who have been posting links have had their sites taken down because of copyright claims. So most people will not make it obvious how to get at their files lest they all disappear or they get legal letters.

If you haven't already received help, perhaps a direct email to the person involved may solicit more of a response than a post on a public forum? Just a suggestion...

Cheers

Thanks for the response, KJ.

I'm not surprised that the BBC might be cracking down, I've been amazed over the years just how lax they have been with JAM and other radio programmes, though the recording and exchange of programmes is a tradition going back as long as I can remember; indeed Paul Merton himself frequently refers to the time in the eighties when he recorded and repeatedly listened to Just A Minute episodes in his bedsit.

Perhaps some kind soul who knows how to achieve reasonable quality recordings from the BBC play again service might add a step by step guide on how to use software such as Audacity - and more to the point, what settings should be used to get a reasonable recording - all mine sound terribly 'hollow' for some reason and are really quite nasty via headphones on my mp3 player. Such a guide would be a great addition to the files section of this group.

Having said that, there are many anonymous sites which still have JAM episodes available for download, such as sendspace, but not the very recent ones. Perhaps contractual changes have forced more recent shows to be removed from these sites. Also, new size limits have rendered useless many of the links in the link section of this group on sites such as mediafire. It is ironic that shows are becoming harder to come by as communications improve.

If anyone knows where I can pick up recent episodes, especially the first two of the current series which I missed completely, then please do drop me a mail at my yahoo mail box with the link.

Perhaps it is time to revert to winMx, an undetectable peer-to-peer sharing network through which I picked up my first few hundred episodes over a decade ago...

whether or not the BBC is having a crackdown, it should be noted that there HAS NOT been any crackdown from the BBC against this group at any point in seven years.

I would like to thank all those who have kindly taken the time to respond to my request in private in the traditional and generous spirit of many in this group.

I have sent private thanks by e-mail, but would like to extend a public thank you to D. E. as my e-mail expressing my gratitude was bounced "due to abuse" (how and by whom I know not).

I now have bookmarked pages which I hope will stand me in good stead for the future when my own recordings fail or I am unable to make them within the 7 day window allowed and I will continue to attempt to improve them to the standards I once achieved through Replay Music software under Windows XP which, alas, does not work under windows 7.

Thanks again, everyone.

Oz

This group does not distribute files of copyrighted materials, it only publishes links to places that do.

Thus far the BBC and the UK government have not attempted to close any site that does this. Unfortunately the UK government has agreed to extradite at least one UK citizen to face federal charges at the request of the US government for publishing a site with links to other sites which provided access to free copies of TV and film media. Ironically, if this 21 year old student (at the time) had been a US citizen he would be protected under their constitutional rights to exercise his freedom of speech in making public these LINKS (not files).

Richard O'Dwyer has spent years fighting extradition and now appears to have done a deal to appear voluntarily before a US court for a deal which guarantees a reduced sentence if convicted of a maximum of 5 years. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-20525891

I have always bought the past releases of JAM CDs and tapes and have encouraged others to do so, as has Dean I seem to remember. On the other hand, holding back every episode and stopping distribution (if indeed that is happening) seems to me to be going too far, as is the case cited above, in my opinion.

I have made a recording of my copy of Freud Ego after many years of attempting to find a decently priced audio edition of the (unfortunately) abridged copy of his autobiography read by himself. This despite the fact I own my own print copy. The fact Clement is now no longer with us, and more to the point, the fact that the BBC never saw fit to issue further editions so that the 3 hour double cassette tapes were exchanging on Amazon for over £100 GB pounds leaves me with a dilemma - should I make my recording available? What are the views of the group?
