Topic: The Omar Khayam show

Hi all,

I realize that this is entirely off topic for Just a Minute, but I'm hoping
someone here can help as some of you seem to be experts on BBC comedy. What
can you tell me about the show listed in the subject? I have four of them
but with no dates. Running times seem to be about 27:30 and I would make a
random guess that it's from the early 1970s, but I don't know. They say
that it's based on an Australian series. Do you know anything else about
the series and is there any kind of a log? How many episodes were produced?
It sounds like an interesting series, similar in some ways to the Goon Show
but different. Thanks for any information you might have.

According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Omar_Khayyam_Show)Milligna made 3 series of The Idiot's Weekly for Australian broadcast and these were rehashed/rerecorded as a series of 6 for the BBC in 1963.

I believe I have all 6 lurking on a hard drive somewhere!

"The Omar Khayyam Show" was a BBC remake of six episodes from "The Idiot Weekly", a comedy show written and starring Spike Milligan, which began on ABC Radio in 1958. There are a couple of Wikipedia articles which will give you all the dates, etc. that you're looking for.

The series exists complete in the BBC archive although they don't seem to have exploited it commercially yet. It was broadcast on Friday evenings at 9.30pm, beginning 27th December 1963.

Tony - As is often the case, the Wikipedia broadcast dates are inaccurate. If the authors of such pages don't have access to Radio Times it's a shame they don't either search the daily radio listings in The Times online archive or invest in a copy of Tatchell's Guide To BBC Radio Comedy.  Only five episodes were broadcast at 9:30pm Fridays from 24th January 1964.  The sixth and final episode was broadcast at 9:00pm on Tuesday 5th May 1964 [not 5th February]

John - If you can find them I, and I'm sure others, would appreciuate an upload somewhere. I don't have any episodes myself.

Thanks. I have four out of six, but I don't know if they are the UK or
overseas recordings. They run fast and are direct transfers from my reels.
I might have the other two episodes somewhere, but I don't know. If
nothing else, your uploads give me a good idea of the correct running times.
That's most helpful. I did find a list of episodes and apparently it was
somehow related to the Goon Show. I confirmed the 1963-64 dates from the
log I found. My files are not in mp3, but they sound like there is a lot of
tape hiss if anyone wants them.

Spike Milligan was a founding member and Head writer for most of the Goon Shows
