Recording for the next series of JAM was supposed to start on November 26th, but it looks like the first date has been cancelled:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/showsandtours/shows/shows/just_a_minute_26nov13

Hopefully they'll get a few more shows in the can this year so that they can follow straight on from the Christmas special that they recorded on September 6th...

The recording dates for the next series have now been posted:

Wednesday, 18th December, 7.15pm

Sunday, 12th January, 7.15pm

Saturday, 18th January, 7.15pm

So it looks like it'll be a six parter...

You can apply for tickets on the BBC website:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/showsandtours/shows/shows/just_a_minute_dec13

Now... should we refer to the Xmas Special as S67E08, S68E01 or just XMAS13?

Just got back from this evenings recording of JAM. :-)

This new series is being produced by Tilusha Ghelani who came on stage at 7.40pm to open the proceedings and introduce Nicholas.

Nicholas then did a little warm-up with the audience before introducing the four players:

Paul Merton, Alun Cochrane, Russell Kane and a new contender, Rebecca Front.

Sitting next to Nicholas keeping the score and blowing the whistle was Trudi Stevens.

Recording finally got underway about 7.50pm and continued until 9.10pm. The first episode they recorded consisted of the following rounds:

Dickensian London (Paul)
Chocolate (Russell)
An Irrational Fear (Rebecca)
Discovering my Roots (Alun)
A Double Bill (Paul)
How to Start a Revolution (Russell)
The Femme Fatale (Rebecca)
Bread or Toast (Alun)
Previously on Just a Minute... (Paul)
Lame Ducks (Russell)
Trolls (Rebecca)

Nicholas fluffed the ending, giving out the wrong scores and saying that Russell Kane had won when in fact he came second! Then he couldn't remember Trudi's name or who he should be crediting at the end. He insisted on doing a full retake, even though Tilusha said they could have edited it together.

It was very warm in the Radio Theatre at Broadcasting House so Nicholas took his jacket off before the second recording got underway. The subjects this time were:

A Habitual Lie (Alun)
My Celebrity Crush (Rebecca)
The Metaphysical Poets (Russell)
A Miniature Village (Paul)
A Benign Dictatorship (Alun)
Childish Behaviour (Rebecca)
Bingo Wings (Russell)
A Snake Charmer (Paul)
Origami (Alun)
Making a Confession (Rebecca)
The Back of My Hand (Russell)
Present and Correct (Paul)

There were a couple of retakes at the very end, one because of a recording glitch which required Nicholas to introduce the subject "Bread or Toast" again, and the second was for a clean whistle. There were many attempts at this by Trudi but the whistle just didn't sound right. Nicholas then a go with it but couldn't get it sounding correct either. Finally, Paul got out of his chair and had a go and managed to get a nice clean whistle sound to end the evening with.

It'll be interesting to see how many of these rounds make it to the final edit. They've certainly chosen some very strange subjects for this series! And in case you're wondering why I added an ellipsis after "Previously on JAM" it's because Nicholas introduced it as: "The next subject, it says here on the card: Previously on Just a Minute, dot dot dot."

Series 68 airs from February 10th through to March 17th 2014.

Thanks for the very complete write-up,

Interesting subjects for sure.  It seems that they typically air between 9 and 12 round, so depending on how long they ran, we could hear all of these or we could be missing 3 or 4 per show from the final edit.

Surprised Nicholas spaced on Trudi's name, given how long she's been the whistle blower!

Well, over the last year, he's had Sharon Leonard, Trudi Stevens and Yvonne Slater blowing the whistle for him! He's also had three producers: Katie Tyrell, Elizabeth Clark and Tilusha Ghelani. So I can certainly forgive Nick for his slight lapse of memory. The funny thing was he forgot Trudi's name both times this evening...

Assuming you didn't leave one out, I'm surprised the contestants didn't get three starts each in the first episode, Alun only got two. Did the two episodes take the same amount of time to record?

Trudi wore headphones so she could hear the producer and she would write down any messages for Nicholas - in particular to let him know when it was time for the final round. Presumably this is when they feel they have enough usable content. I didn't time the shows individually but they took about 40 minutes each to record.

Admitting I’ve only been to three recordings, but each time they recorded 45 minutes for first show, and 40 for second.

Next time I'll make a note of the exact start and end times of each recording! ;-)

I was more concerned with writing down the subjects they were being given - I had brought a pen with me specifically for this purpose!

They spend a few minutes before the first recording getting each player to test their buzzer and to say a few words to check their mic level, then another few minutes are spent doing retakes at the end. I wasn't wearing a watch but I did check the clock at the back of the Radio Theatre when Tilusha first walked on the stage (7.40pm) and again as I was leaving the theatre (9.15pm) so I know the panel were on the stage for less than 90 minutes - they came on one at a time after being introduced by Nicholas during his 5 minute warm-up and exited as soon as the recording finished leaving just Nicholas on stage chatting to the guests.

Yes thanks for the info. This is all very interesting. What were they re-taking? Surely not game-time talking? What a sham! hehe.

I've been applying for tickets whenever I see them come up since I found that tickets website only  this year (having listened to JaM for about 20 years now). I hadn't had any success until I got tickets to see the News Quiz last week, which I was thrilled about. The whole session lasted from about 7.30 to 9pm with the 'recording' starting and stopping about 5 minutes after the start and before the end. In case anyone is interested in that, Jeremy brought along some strong christmas alcohol that they said they'd edit out. There was a funny, obvious edit point where Miles Jupp started answering a question without knowing the protagonists name and muddled along, then after they'd all chipped in a little, he re-answered the question with all this fresh information. :) I wonder if they cut pieces around out of sequence to get a good 28 minutes out of it.

I have always wondered about the Just a Minute scores, as Nicholas never gives absolute scores, only relative positions, so perhaps there are a few rounds they can edit out without meticulous score counters at home really noticing. :)

Anyway, really looking forward to the next series (as always)! Thanks for the teaser!

yes they definitely do drop rounds on just about all the recordings. I always “keep score” and it is very very rare for it to be identical to what Nicholas is announcing.
