Started as a comedy performer in ISIRTA, moved on to producing radio
shows, then administration, became head of BBC Radio, knighted for his
services to radio.

David Hatch brought a great deal to the Just a Minute series during the time he produced the show.  I remember him also as a performer on ISIRTA and also as the host of 'Wireless Wise'.  he will be greatly missed.

It's worth stating here that David Hatch was an absolutely crucial
person in the creation of JAM.

He was at that time, 1967, a talented young producer, aged 28. The BBC
commisisoned a pilot, but didn't want to commission the series. David
Hatch told his bosses "I think we have a winner here. If I'm wrong, I
clearly don't know much about radio". He said he would resign if the
series didn't go ahead.

That was a very brave thing for a young producer to say against the
hierarchial stuffy BBC bosses.

And as we know the BBC gave in, and the series did go ahead. That shows
how much they wanted to retain the talented young man

And the key casting of Nicholas, Clement, Derek, Kenneth and Peter was
all the work of David Hatch.

Ian Messiter was the deviser of JAM, but it was David Hatch that gave
birth to the show, that brought it to life. He's still the longest
serving producer of JAM.

He will be sorely missed.

A tribute to him here -

Wow, now that's cool to know.  definitely showcases David's instincts were definitely on the money regarding the show itself.

Sad News-one of seattle's universery/NPR radio stations ran ISIRTA in
the early 70's so I mainly know David Hatch from that although i did
know about his role in JAM and his Head of BBC Radio work. Funny
thing I was listening to a ISIRTA just monday and it was one of the
rare occasions that David played the 'lead' in their 'play of the
week'( it was a take off on Dickens Christmas Carol) and it was going
to end in a Massively Bad Pun ( what else is new with that show?LOL )
and David was saying no no I am not going to do this and the others
were egging him on till the line was said and it got a big groan.
Thanks David for all the laughs and epecially JAM. Miriam
