Does anyone know if there will be any programmes to celebrate Paul having appeared on Just A Minute for 25 years this coming April (his first appearance being Episode 2 of Series 22 on 4th April 1989 (taken from Dean's site))?
He's probably the one who helped keep it going after Kenneth died and brought it up to date, giving it a fresh impetus and opening it up for guests like Julian, Tony and many others.
Hopefully something will be done and the Beeb won't let it slide.

Anyone got any favourite moments?
Probably the most obvious recently were the two episodes (i forget which ones they were) with the panel up higher than the audience and Paul pleading to get down in the first.

there are lots of favourite Paul moments for me. the outer space trip minute from 1995 is a fave of mine.

And I really enjoyed just this week his comment...

Gyles – Tony, I’m not speaking to you any more!

Paul – Tony, quick, what’s your secret?

I wouldn’t expect any special programmes though!

As a Paul fan there are so many but the ones that I can remember off the top of my head are

1. Paul berating Derek over his treatment of his dog in the round of "My Pet"

2. Paul complaining several times about the Raining beating down on the Tent in the shows from Fowey Cornwall.

3. Paul and Julian "fighting' over some guy- can't remember which show or the subject but it was a running joke

4.Paul on telepathy - again the show escapes me

5. Paul being a bit rude to Wendy about her going on about her pet bird Henry in one of the shows from Bury St. Edmunds-- and he keep getting tony slattery to break up

One that always sticks in my mind is that Paul buzzed for a correct challenge but after another challenge that was wrong. Nicolas told him he couldn't have it as he was too late but could if he buzzed in later, so Paul waited for whoever was speaking to restart, challenged and got the subject. The lunancy of it all made it a highlight of mine. Nic doesn;t normally allow those but a few times he has.
I have no idea of the show or the subject.

Sorry for the double post.

On the matter of Paul and Wendy I always wondered why they weren't on the same show that often. When i listened to those shows it seemed to me that Paul would generally take the mick out of her a little harder than others.
And going off topic there is the brilliant moment at the beginning of one episode where Wendy questioned Nicholas over why she was announced last when he introduced the panel. Always a highlight when Wendy got riled (Clement's lists being the most well remembered reason why)..

About 19 years ago Paul told us how 19 years ago he went to the planet Venus and anyone who says this isn't true can go outside and he'll give them a damn good fight because it's true. He was stuck on the surface of that particular planet for years.

I had that one on a tape for a long time. I think it wore out in the end. I used to be able to just recite it. Would love to hear that one again. Peter Jones also referenced it in a later show in defense of an anti-surrealism challenge. :)

Hi Bill. The episode you want is JAM-1995-02-04@450,S28E07=A_Crash_Course

(It can also found in JAM-2007-12-31@SPC,S51E12=Forty_Years_of_Just_a_Minute-SPECIAL)

It was later referenced by Peter Jones in JAM-1995-03-04@454,S28E11=Odd_Surnames.

Nicholas sd in his last book that Paul and Wendy rubbed each other the wrong way. Eventually Paul said he wouldn’t come on the show with her and so she got the boot.

I think i asked that before and you replied Dean. Thanks for answering a second time, i'll try and remember.

In my trawl thru the Merton years of JAM (i started 3 or 4 years ago, i think, who knowns) i just listened to the show with Clement's Hibiscus Border and Paul's disbelief at Nicolas giving the benefit of the doubt. It really was a classic bit of JAM. No idea what i'll do when i get to end.

According to my itunes it would take 6 days, 5 hours and 4 minutes to listen to all of Paul's 318 appearances back to back. There's a challenge.

In  the concluding part of our exclusive serialisation of his new book, Nicholas Parsons, the veteran host of Radio 4’s Just A Minute recalls the most talented panellist in the show’s history – and Wendy Richard’s strange dislike of Paul Merton
http://www.express.co.uk/expressyourself/192209/Nicholas-Parsons-Just-a-minute

…..Someone who came into Just A Minute much later was Paul Merton. Everyone respects Paul for the flair and skill he shows but Wendy Richard did not like him and this caused problems. When Wendy first started, she was always great value. I met her in the early Sixties when she appeared in sketches in The Arthur Haynes Show. She had a real sense of fun.

I could tell she was going to achieve great things and I was delighted by her success in Are You Being Served? which ran for 13 years.

Sadly, I think Wendy changed when she joined EastEnders as Pauline Fowler, a fairly aggressive character. I felt she in some way morphed into Pauline. She always seemed to get narky with people.

In one show her feelings towards Paul Merton boiled over. He challenged her and Wendy snapped: “You’re having a go at me again! You’re always like that. What have I done to you?”

Wendy was not joking. This was said in deadly earnest. I did my best to cover but I felt embarrassed. Paul, who is very tolerant, could not understand her behaviour.

It reached the point that if Wendy was booked for the show Paul did not want to be cast. In the end, the producer decided to stop casting her.

I have no idea why she disliked Paul. He often makes jokes at my expense but I enjoy the banter as much as he does…………..

One of my favourite exchanges involving Paul at the moment, was from the episode with Gyles, Sue and Graham I think (the opening round was Losing Your Rag). The group discussed Gyles being a "Tommy Two-Ways", Sue brought in the fact that her mother was a "Tamara Two-Ways". Paul challenged, suggesting that she is in fact a "Betty, Belinda or Bunty Both-Ways." I just loved that particular moment. I really don't know why.

I really like when Paul makes snarky remarks, especially directed to Nicholas. For instance, another favourite of mine was during an exchange with Sue in another episode. Sue mentions Nicholas being a silver fox and a collosus of entertainment. Paul's response: "There's no need to take the piss about it! We're all trying to make it work." Maybe not gut-bustingly funny, but it amused me no end.
