Someone else I'd like to mention in the 'Brief But Memorable'
category, is the late John Junkin.
he came onto the show during the 80's and made a grand total of 8
appearances throughout, with a final appearance being in the very
early 90's.
John was quite unique in that he played the game for laughs, and it
was obvious he knew how to play the game in that regard, because I
remember his very first show he challenged Peter Jones for all three
rules and added on, total arrogance and that he didn't like his
shirt.
He was essentially one of the braver people to appear on the show,
but I always had the impression that Nicholas didn't like him,
because it always seemed that whatever it was that John challenged
on, Nicholas would never allow it.
or that he would never get the chance to even speak because one of
the regulars would cut in on him immediately for deviation. one
prime example was during one show where John made an aside as he was
starting saying something like 'just so you know, I really do talk
like this, but anyway...' BUZZ, and the subject is taken away from
him and Nicholas seemed quite happy for John to be humiliated in that
manner, considering it was John that first brought up the question as
to whether Clement really did talk the way he talked.
John could argue with the best of them, and frequently pulled
Nicholas up for his inconsistencies, and sometimes he would be in the
same league as the regulars, challenging someone for a minute
hesitation, but would never get the subject, and sometimes Nicholas
could be downright condescending and patronizing towards John, which
really rattled me to no end.
one incident I recall is when John challenged someone for repeating
the word 'to' or 'two' or 'too', and Nicholas said that they don't
bother with small words and John retaliated by saying 'On a previous
episode Tim Rice, who happens to be famous, rich and powerful,
challenged someone on yo-yo for repetition of yo, and HE allowed it!'
I also recall his numerous appearances on 'ISIHAC' and thought he was
exceptional, and his comedy and humor came across much more clearly
on that show than on JAM, for obvious reasons.
I know that he was a comedy performer of some reknown before his
death, anyone recall what else he did?
