for the last recording of the current season is Paul Merton, Sheila Hancock, Kevin Eldon and Joe Lycett.

Not a great season for the semi-regulars - no Tony Hawks, no Graham Norton and no Sue Perkins. Sue has now missed three of the past four seasons.

Sue's plate is probably full, with the Great British Bake Off and - I imagine - many other well-deserved projects.

I'm a fanatic for any series of JAM, and have admittedly enjoyed this one thus far in spite of the lack of several regulars. For the most part I'm warming to some of the newer players, though I miss the three regulars one new (or new-ish) player equation that has been further diluted over the past few years.

Having said that, it does seem odd to me that there are so many big names missing from the Summer line up - Sue, Tony, Pam Ayres to name a few players who have been stalwarts. Regular luminaries being busy or not, we're talking JAM here. I know it is selfish on my part to expect them to open up a day in their schedules to participate, but I don't feel that is so much to hope for when you're reaching a world wide audience. It is rude of me to say this, but I thought Joe Lycett was terrible in the episode he did with Paul, Sue and Greg Proops last season and was hoping it would be a case of one and done.

I don't remember hearing Graham Norton this series yet either...

I am missing a few of those line-ups of Graham, Sue and either Giles or Paul plus a guest.

I guess sometimes they're harder to book? It's a shame though. I think both Graham and Sue really shine without an auto-cue, comparing it to some of their TV work.

yes I think this season seems especially light on experience.

Still it’s what is produced that counts, I guess. What do people think of the two shows so far this season?

Only heard the first show so far and thought it was good but not great.

Paul and Julian are always good together and Jenny always provides some funny moments so it was never going to be bad. Was dreading hearing Vanessa on the show as she is so forceful with her opinions everywhere else, but she did well and would be beneficial to give her a few appearances - can't offer any less than a few of the others who have been tried over the last two or three series (wasn't expecting to type that beforehand).

One of the benefits of JAM is that even if you dislike someone elsewhere the format of the show means you only hear short segments from them in one go so its possible to move away and enjoy the show and what they offer (plus if the individual isnt any good you can fire into them with more heat).

I've enjoyed the shows thus far this series, and actually enjoyed the previous series more than I had imagined that I would. They've managed to bring along some entertaining new players in the past several series, players I now enjoy listening to - Fi Glover, Alun Cochrane, Rebecca Front, Holly Walsh, and Stephen Mangan to name a few. I just think it's a slippery slope booking more than one new player per episode when there are so many good established players to be had, players I have come to enjoy time and time again. I realize this is something of an ongoing gripe I've voiced before, but I also know it's one that others share as well. We only get so much JAM each year so I don't think it's unreasonable to hope to hear three established favorites per show and four established players going at each other once each series, because that's when JAM really shines in my book.

Yes, I agree about the problems of having too many new puppies on the team all at once.
A beginner needs experienced players to listen to and learn from. Having more than one on a panel leads to a real mess as they leap around excitedly and wee on each other.
This must probably cause great frustration to the outnumbered veterans and chairman.
I know it frustrates listeners.

But if the Beeb can't find enough old hands for an episode, I guess they have to use what they can get.

Yes

It would be so much better if the BBC was like the ABC used to be and just played the old episodes where you had three or four people on who were predictable qualities - Clement would list, Derek would fall into one if his ecclesiastical characters, Kenneth drawl, do voices or sulk, Peter dodder, nick be even more patronizing ly sexist if a woman was on. Wendy was a breath of fresh air. I loved that JAM - grew up on it. But I can't listen to many back to back.

New players know the game - very few haven't listened to it and love it. Some of the established players grate on different people (Tony for me, Gyles comes and goes, Pam's tweeness). Me, I think the variety mixes it up and brings new perspectives and styles.
