Topic: My observations thus far...

Message 2 / 100

Hello all,I am 31, soon to be 32. Up until about a week ago, I was a total JAM virgin. I had never listened to a single episode. Frank Skinner mentioned on his radio show that he had just been on JAM which was "something to tick off his bucket list". This led me, for whatever reason, just to look up the show. I was aware of it, but something piqued my curiosity. Then, I saw that Nicholas Parsons is 90(!) and has not missed a show since 1967. I did a few searches to see if I could find more info and to find some old episodes. And sure enough, I found Dean's wonderful site (surely everyone's first stop for JAM online) as well as a pile of old episodes on a download (I've already forgotten the source!).

I am not one to do things by halves. I didn't just want to listen to the latest episode or dive in with the Merton era, I had to start at the beginning in 1967. Indeed, I have been listening to all the episodes from this download from the first one. I'm now just at the start of 1973. I thought I'd use this thread to track some observations as I continue this journey.

- While Clement Freud seems to be the one who uses "every trick in the book", it's actually Derek Nimmo who is the more aggressive and sharper challenger. On the 60s shows, he seems like the most fierce competitor -- at times it is almost as if he is bullying the female guests with his near-constant haranguing.

- The times when Nicholas is on the panel, I'm afraid, really highlights his limitations as a performer. At the same time though, it also shows how tough his job is: Clement is too strict as chairman, Kenneth is too lenient accepting every challenge.

- Of the female participants thus far, Geraldine Jones has been far and away my favourite and perhaps also the best at the game. Wonderfully articulate woman who has a wit that goes under the radar. On the other hand, Nicholas's sucking up to Aimi MacDonald is both cloying and cringe-worthy. Sheila Hancock is fiesty and gives Kenneth, especially, a run for his money, but I don't think she's as good at the game as Geraldine. Andree Melley has been too nondescript to make a real impression.

- Kenneth Williams is not the same on the 1960s shows as he would be in the early 70s shows. It seems like it takes him some time to grow in confidence on the show, by 69 it's obvious that he's a fixture, but he's still quite reserved by his standards on those shows.  There turning point, I would say, is Peter Jones's arrival. Listening to the shows in sequence, it is almost as if Jones being there flicks a switch in Kenneth. He becomes much much more adversarial, territorial almost. I do not know what it is about Jones that brought this out in him, but his performances in 1972-3 are borderline psychotic at times with his rants at Jones and at Nicholas. It's all in good humour, of course, and frequently very funny -- indeed, these shows are much funnier than the earlier shows -- but one gets the impression that Williams was also letting Jones know who was boss. I find this turn in Kenneth a bit puzzling because Peter seems like such a mild and good natured chap, but the difference in him after Jones's introduction is marked. It is unmistakable, I would say.

- Speaking of Peter Jones, he is not at bad at the game as the various descriptions I've read make out. Does he get worse? While he's not been spectacular in terms of scoring points thus far, he's more than held his own. His put downs of Kenneth during their verbal sparring has been glorious. On one I was just listening to (Episode from 30/1/73), he brought the house down by saying he couldn't possibly know what the topic was from listening to Kenneth rabbiting on. Very funny.

- Clement Freud seems to win every single game. His only real competition seemingly is Derek Nimmo. It seems to me that they mostly pair off Clement vs. Derek, Kenneth vs. Peter. Clement and Kenneth seem to have a tacit alliance. But all are united in their contempt for Nicholas.

It's been interesting to see how the show has developed and changed in its first 5 years. I'm looking forward to getting to 2014 eventually. And I'll track my observations here as a I do.

It's great to hear a virgin critique JAM. After years of familiarity with the show, one can become inured to features that a pair of new ears can notice.

I haven't done a complete safari through all episodes for about five years, so I might start again once this series ends.

Thanks Jerry!  (And if you look in my sig below, you can find a few JAM resources for your greater researching pleasure.)

Well thanks Mark. Since reading around here and finding my way to your site, I found that the download I mentioned had very many missing episodes, so I paused my progress to go back to listen to ones I missed.I've listened to every single episode from 1969 now and now have some different insights into developing dynamics:

- The real story of the 1969 epsodes (seasons 3 and 4 as listed by Dean's site), is the apparent friendship and alliance between Kenneth and Clement. It is strange, but Kenneth seems to fawn over Clement and supports his challenges against Derek. By the end of the 1969, Sheila Hancock wonders what is going on between them and accuses them of collusion.

- Derek is often accused of being rude and "un-gallant" by Nicholas, and he is very unforgiving to the female players.

- I still think that Geraldine Jones is by far the best of the female players, but with greater exposure to Sheila Hancock on these episodes, she has more of a personal connection to the regulars, especially Kenneth. I listened out for Andree Melley to see if she'd make more of an impression and she doesn't do much more than "merely okay", I'd describe her as a "poor man's Geraldine Jones".

- Of the other women, both Moira Lister and Miriam Karlin seemed very flustered, but honestly, none of them stand out in any way -- I think it was a very difficult gig to go in there with the three regulars.

- A frequent feature of the 1969 episodes is Nicholas being quite school-masterly in giving Kenneth tickings off when he's going over the top.

- Also, Nicholas goes to the audience vote far too often during seasons 3 and 4, and it comes across as wormy behaviour to me.

- Finally, while Nicholas's creepiness with Aimi MacDonald is in full effect during her appearances, she is also quite annoying in playing the ditz and almost encouraging his preferential treatment.

I'm really enjoying your observations, Jerry. I hope you'll keep them coming. I agree with you that Derek is a much more aggressive player than many people seem to remember him being. I think as you continue to listen that Sheila may eclipse Geraldine as best guest player (she always seemed to win, but also gave the other players room to entertain...a tricky quality). I agree Nicholas went to the audience too often in the early days, but I don't think it was so much indecisiveness but a way to engage them, which I think he thought was entertaining. As for Aimi, I think she was a lot of fun, was there because her ditzy persona was refreshing, and that Nicholas was just playing off of it. Anyway, it's interesting to revisit the early days. I used to think they had nothing on the Merton era, but Williams' wild personality (along with a paradoxically calmer overall show style) keeps me going back more often than I realized. Thanks for your posts.

Hi everyone old and new.
Not posted for a while as no need.  But I am amazed at how fresh and youthful Nicolas sounds. He is working like someone 30 or 40 years younger and it is a joy to listen to him.

Hope all is well with everyone.

As much as I dislike JR, I think he did very well indeed; that surprised me greatly I must admit.
I also must admit I'm surprised the BBC have forgiven him (again) and let him back in but after that performance you can start to understand why...
I would not be surprised if he made several (or even many) more appearances.

For whoever is interested; Our dear beloved server streaming JAM 24/7 is
sadly entering the last round.

This server has kept going for several years now, and these days it's
almost constantly loaded with listeners. It is just a consumer-grade,
cheap (pink!) mini laptop that quite frankly I'm amazed has lasted this
long. The power supply got fried some months ago and had to be replaced,
but other than that it's kept going. Kudos to ASUS for making stuff that
last.

Either way, it has now finally started struggling severely. I suspect
both disk errors and motherboard problems, it can't even boot in regular
mode but requires some manual fiddling to make the services start
properly during boot.

We have experienced some downtime lately and I am afraid we will
continue to do so until I got a hardware replacement. Not entirely sure
what machine I'll use for this, but I'll solve it one way or another.
The JAMmer must live!

Hi James and thanks.

It's an interesting suggestion, but I don't think there are any shoutcast server binaries compiled for the Raspberry (did a quick google but found nothing), and even if there was I don't think it would manage 100+ simultaneous connections. Not sure, but I doubt it.

But it'd be darn cool for sure to run it on a Raspberry! Love those little rascals. :)

No, please, it's very very kind of you Josey but I could never accept such a contribution.

There are options, I just gotta figure out the best option. I think I will invest in a quite capable server hardware that can serve multiple purposes in my home, where the shotcast stream is just one of many services running.

We'll see, but whatever I decide the server *will* continue to live as best as it can. It may just, as stated, be a bit unstable until a replacement has taken over.

I'll keep you posted :)

Either way, it has now finally started struggling severely. I suspect
both disk errors and motherboard problems, it can't even boot in regular

We have experienced some downtime lately and I am afraid we will

I have now reached the end of 1970, which is the end of season 4 and then most of season 5. Geraldine Jones has gone, but Derek Nimmo is not yet off on his travels.

This stretch of shows provides the "missing link" between the early Kenneth and the Kenneth we find once Peter Jones turns up -- the change is much less sudden than I first thought, it is gradual. Over these shows he establishes several key tropes that he would repeat time and again:

1. Upon having a decision go his way: "Oh yes, a very good chairman, very good chairman" etc. This is pretty funny, because it can come either directly before or after ...

2. Upon having a decision not go his way: "It's a DISGRACE! etc." Kenneth's frequnet and flagrant double standards and hypocrisy are most entertaining. In these 1970 shows he's still more playful than he is aggressive, and it will be interesting to see whether or not the aggressive side ramps up when Peter Jones arrives in season 6, as I claimed in my initial post.

3. Claiming that he "plays for entertainment, not for points". He does this several times, provoking witty buzzes from Clement Freud who interjects with "he's not playing for points, I am". This is also funny because it will often come after a rant by Kenneth over a given point. The way he flits in and out of taking the game seriously adds to his overall sense of whimsy. One minute it's the most important thing on earth to win a point, next minute he doesn't care. Consummate showman.

4. Excessive prudishness. This is a hold over from many of his Carry On characters, but he'll frequently object to things that are "dirty", "filthy", "disgusting" and so on.

5. Playing up when Nicholas is trying to do a link and then getting scolded by Nicholas. This can be very funny too. "You are ridiculous sometimes Kenneth!"

6. Many silly voices and elongation of vowels. Sometimes these are so absurd that I can't help but laugh, it's almost as if he's disappearing into thin air or something, hilarious.

I think it's with this stretch of shows that Kenneth really establishes himself as a the star of the show. He's a constant presence, even when he's not talking, you can "feel" him there. Some other observations:

- Clement is a bit more playful at times during these shows, but also there are occasions where he's a bit difficult or tetchy. You can tell sometimes that he doesn't like it when a decision doesn't go his way and then he "strikes back" with a harsh challenge seconds later. Just as Kenneth feels like a constant presence, I think Clement does too -- you can "feel" him there as the arbiter of the proper rules and of the competitive spirit of the game. But as I said, more playfulness too -- he sometimes gives people points for free just for amusement, and occasionally does so to highlight some of Nicholas's glaring inconsistencies.

- Speaking of Nicholas, his sucking up to the female players is almost out of control on some of these. He's sometimes condescending and patronizing to them. Once in a while he throws out a compliment like "little blinder" that seems to go too far to me. I know he's trying to be nice to new players and some of this is because it was 1970, and not 2014, but I wonder if some of Nicholas's behaviour actually made the women feel more uncomfortable than they might have. He's trying to be "gallant" and accommodating, but frequently comes off like a total creep to me.

- Derek has settled into a nice rhythm. He's a tiny bit less aggressive than he is on the earlier shows, and his guffawing generally adds to a warm atmosphere. I also think that he acts as a great counterweight to both Clement and Kenneth. He takes the game as seriously as Clement and can be just as sharp or petty in the little challenges. At the same time, he's flamboyant, eccentric and a showman, so Kenneth doesn't dominate proceedings too much. His little ticks like "really", "what ho!", "awfully" and so on are quite endearing to. It's also pretty funny when he totally makes something up, gets called on it, keeps up the pretense of it being true for a moment before owning up. There's one where he claims to join some sort of Scottish regiment and Nicholas asks him to swear by his oath on it, and then he admits to making it up. It's a lot of fun, because he's a sort of Baron Munchausen character: you never quite know if his various yarns and travels are true.

- Of the women, Sheila Hancock is growing on me. I think Denise Coffey is a poor replacement for Geraldine Jones though, she sounds out of sync with the show. Of the newcomers, Jacqueline MacKenzie is hilarious, partly because she clearly doesn't know the game at all -- they give her a full minute during which she makes about 16 repetitions and no one challenges. There's also one with Liz Fraser or Katherine Whitehorn (can't remember which) when she's "getting into her stride" so Nick is very lenient with challenges, which produces a lot of funny moments too.

Onwards to 1971!

Incidentally, I bought the Just a Minute book by Nicholas Parsons on the weekend. Just done some light browsing so far, but some of his observations seem spot on to me.

Great as always, Jerry. Agree with you on most points, although I like the old-school "gallant" Nicholas and don't find him off-putting. Kenneth's antics on the show really display what a brilliant humorist he could be; it's a shame he didn't have more film roles that could better showcase his talent. I do think he played for entertainment instead of points on JAM, but I think his comparative lack of challenges means that he talks less often then he might on some episodes; what seems to set him off most often is not that he fails to compete, but that someone interrupts his flow during a clever riff. Anyway, good trip through the past.

Just a quick correction: the hilarious woman I mentioned was Katherine Whitehorn, I got her and Jacqueline MacKenzie confused. All the women do tend to blur into one. I must try to keep special track of them when they stand out. Jacqueline MacKenzie, I *think* is the one is given a full minute to herself, because she was so bad. Whitehorn is more combative, although clearly doesn't know the game, so her challenges are quite funny.

I apologise if this has been explained before, but I'm wondering how one can count next week's ep as the 900th episode of JAM (as announced at the end of today's show)?

The current count, according to my calculations, is 835.

P.S. My hardback copy of 'Welcome to JAM' arrived today.

It really depends what you count. Do we count just radio or include TV? If you do count TV, do you count the non-BBC ones? Do you include the Silver Minutes 25th anniversary clips show, and do you include the 40th anniversary clips programme? Do you include the Junior Just A Minutes? You can make cases for and against all of these, and if you look at my website I count them in several different ways.

But if you do include everything – radio, TV, Junior JAM and the two clips shows – this week’s show was the 899th and next week is the 900th.

I am going to switch from doing whole years to going season-by-season with my comments, because it seems to make more sense this way.

I got to the end of Season 5 today and the three-handed season finale (2nd March 71, first topic "Kenneth Williams"), is probably the single best and funniest episode I've listened to so far. Everyone is on top form, Derek has a perfect minute ("Funny Bones"), the banter is flying round at a frantic pace. The highlight of the episode is the topic "getting into debt" which takes about 7 or 8 minutes to get through and features Kenneth and Derek relentlessly baracking Nicholas over a decision as Freud chuckles to himself. I can't really do it justice here, but it's hilarious and well worth checking out if you've not heard that episode. Someone explains that when there's no women in the studio, the gloves come off. It descends into schoolboy antics, Nick even feigns crying at one point. Great stuff.

There's not much else on season 5 that I haven't noted already. The Barbara Castle episode came on again (which I heard in my initial false run), and she is definitely one of the more memorable female guests.

I did want to note Kenneth's little recurring character: "Maudie Fiddeworth, fun with a frankfurter!" Just find it amusing, quirky and rather odd that she keeps on coming up time and again. Does he keep her?

The only other thing I want to note is Derek Nimmo's common tactic of twisted the meaning of the phrase on the card. He does it sometimes in very imaginative ways, even when it is completely unnecessary.

For example, just from this past episode as it is fresh in my mind, this is on "Getting into debt":

"I bought a nice big house in the country and I called it 'Debt', and I'm looking forward to getting into it."

I'd say he pulls that trick maybe 50% of the time.

Oh and some noteworthy individual rounds:

From 26th January 71: Topic: "the worst thing I ever did in my kitchen" - Kenneth is talking about making cheese straws, Sheila doesn't believe him, so Nicholas goes to Kenneth's mother in the audience. Just thought it was an interesting little moment of Kenneth's real life being glimpsed on the show.

From 26th January 71. Topic: "pleasantries" - Derek starts off hilariously with his full range of ridiculous little phrases a la "what ho!", Derek is pretty funny in general in these early 1971 episodes, seems to hit top form.

From 16th February 71. Topic: "old gentlemen" - Kenneth does the whole thing in an extraordinary "old man" voice. It's very funny, but also not one from his usual repertoire and not one I can recall from the Carry On films either. Just an example of some of his extraordinary range.

From 2nd March 71. Topic: "Clement Freud" - notably as SOON as Derek mentions "grandfather", Clement buzzes and challenges and gets the topic to change. I've been waiting for some acknowledgement on the show  about his grandfather, but on every occasion it's brought up, something like this happens. He has studiously avoided mentioning him. I wonder if there's something to it.

I've always assumed that Clement wants to be known for his own accomplishments, and not known as "The grandson of Sigmund Freud".  That's always been my take on it, anyway.  I have noticed that he tends to avoid the subject.

Kenneth indeed has tremendous range.  It's a shame that people often think of him as a caricature; he's not only an incredible talent, but also incredibly well-learned.

I think there was more twisting of the subject in the early days, and it's one of the things I miss.  I feel like Gyles Brandreth tries it sometimes these days and usually gets shot down.  It's a rule that seems more strictly enforced, whereas I feel the other rules have gotten more lax over the years.

Paul Merton has now passed Peter Jones as the third most frequent appearing panellist. Paul is now creeping up on Kenneth Williams who he should pass next year. Then only Clement Freud will be ahead of him, but he will have to keep playing for another 10 years or so to pass the great man.

Did everyone notice the return of Claire Jones to produce the Edinburgh shows. I am not sure if this was a brief return or not though I gather Katie Tyrrell is moving on. Claire has been producing the show on and off since 2000 - the first season without both Peter Jones and Derek Nimmo. She has now produced more shows than anyone else, so no-one can doubt her genuine commitment and passion to the show. I do hope she is back for a while as she and Tilusha Ghelani will be a formidable team.

Hi Jerry
Great review once again.

You weren't on this mailing list last July were you, so not sure if you heard this before...

On the subject of KW's mother I was listening to Comedy Greats on Radio 4 Extra
which included an episode of JAM (first subject = parbuckle), it is one of the best
shows ever.
According to Barry Cryer in the intro, the loud raucous lady to be heard laughing
loudly, clapping and cheering is non-other than KenW's mother in her usual place in the front row.

I seemed to breeze through season 6. Thoughts as follows:

- There is undoubtedly a "turn" in Kenneth, but it is not as abrupt as I had first thought but more an "amping up" of what he'd been doing in season 5, just turned up to 11. At the start of season 6 he is truly manic, at times a crazed loon with Nicholas's cries of "SHUT UP KENNETH!" becoming much more frequent than previously. He's more savage to the female guests; with his "it's a disgrace! We should never have had  women on this show!" becoming more frequent as well. Kenneth really becomes the centre of attention during this season; I'm finding him a fascinating character to be honest. I like the way he has such standard reactions and catchphrases, it's like a layering of "in-jokes" for the show. But he's also supremely multi-faceted, knowledgeable about a range of subjects, a master of voices and accents, and -- very unusual for the radio -- his physicality seems somehow to transcend the medium, by which I mean you can somehow feel his animation and see his facial expressions, despite it being audio.

- All of that said, I think season 6 is overall slightly weaker than season 5. There are a number of reasons for this, but chief among them I think, is the absence of Derek Nimmo which starts being keenly felt after the first 4 or 5 episodes. Peter Jones does some to produce something in Kenneth, and he's a very likable presence in general (more in a moment on that), but he doesn't have the sheer force of personality that Derek has to act as a counter-weight to Kenneth.

- Another reason for season 6 being a slight dip after season 5 is the quality of the female guests. There's an awful lot of Andre Melley, who despite being quite experienced by this point, still doesn't really do much to put her head above the parapet. She's an okay player, she can be mildly amusing on occasion, but when she's on the show, she's always very definitely there as the "4th wheel" to make up the numbers -- like she's 6/10 in all things. Even in the season finale when she takes over as Chairman, it's not as if she really shines in the role. As I've said before, she's a poor man's Geraldine Jones.

- But on top of all that, the other female guests: Katherine Whitehorn, and the extremely flustered Juno Alexander, simply aren't as memorable as Barbara Castle or Jacqueline MacKenzie. Oh and Nicholas has one of his most excruciating shows with Aime MacDonald yet -- giving her FOURTEEN points during one round. Clement even joins in and is both remarkably sinister and creepy during it. I couldn't tell if he was deliberately sending up Nicholas by pushing the perviness to new heights, or just trying to have some fun, but the episode of December 28th 1971 is one of my least favourite so far because it is so centred on her. Clement accuses Aimi Macdonald of having a date lined up with Nicholas after the show, and there are some extended and smutty jokes from Nick insinuating that the two of them are sleeping together. As I've said before, I don't find it funny but cloying.

- All of that said, Sheila Hancock has really grown into the show now and is by far the best of the women during this season, and the shows featuring her are generally more fun than the others. I like the way she'll take Kenneth on, she'll call Clement on his dirtier tactics, and she bounces off Peter pretty well too.

- The first thing that struck me about Peter Jones was that he seems to be older than everyone else. He has a kind of strange mixture of stiffness and affability, and reminds me of an old English army officer or something like that. It seems like he's still very much finding his feet during season 6. Even by the final episodes, he's still making silly challenges on stuff like repetition of "also". I think Peter is supremely likable, there's just something about him that is endearing. He seems like he's slightly on his own planet. His voice carries the veneer of the old empire. It's fun when he gets into little arguments with Nicholas, or when he feels slighted by another player, although it doesn't happen too often during this season.

No further notes on individual episodes or rounds, which is perhaps telling that fewer things stood out to me during this season than during the last one. I think the slight dip is understandable given the replacement of Derek with Peter and the number of episodes with weak female guests. Kenneth is hilarious on some of these shows though, especially the first 3 or 4 -- he must have been in an especially funny mood during those recording sessions with Andree Melley, because he's a total nutter on them, almost psychotic!

Onwards to season 7.

For Fryophiles... English Delight series 7.

I missed it completely and just found it.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04d965v/episodes/guide

Unlike JAM's paltry 7 days to listen, Fry gets "OVER A YEAR LEFT TO LISTEN" !

How do they work those things out, I wonder...

The book should have been available in book shops since 4th September, although many people seemed to have picked up a copy earlier than this.

According to the Cannongate website, it was published in hardback on Monday18th August - this is the date that Nicholas appeared at the Edinburgh book festival to sign copies.

The London launch took place on Wednesday 3rd September and I'm sure Dean will fill us in on all the details about that very soon.

The book also got a plug on the BBC after the 900th episode on Monday when the continuity announcer said:
"...and you may like to know that there's a new book out written by Nicholas Parsons all about the show and its history. 'Welcome to Just A Minute' is available now in shops and online..."

As with any long running show, episode numbers always become a bone of contention.

If we use Dean's episode guide as a reference, then there have been 837 "episodes" of JAM.
Dean has included the "Silver Minutes" specials (broadcast over 2 weeks on Radio 4) as 1 episode. When these were released on cassette, there were actually 4 parts to the show, although the last 2 parts were just clips from previous shows without any introductions or recollections from Nicholas in between. To reach the total of 900, though, I presume the BBC have counted the "Silver Minutes" specials as 1 episode.

To this, then, we must add the 28 episodes recorded in 1994 and 1995 for Carlton TV. These were only shown in the London ITV region, late at night (after the 10pm news), and are the hardest episodes to track down on video as they have never been repeated. This brings our total up to 865.

Add on the 20 episodes of the BBC TV series from 1999 (shown in the afternoon, around 12.30pm) and the total rises to 885.

Then there are the 10 episodes recorded in 2012 and shown on BBC2 in the early evening (6pm) which brings our total to 895.

Finally, there are the 5 episodes of Junior JAM recorded for The 4 O'Clock show and broadcast last year on Radio 4 Extra (at around 4.15pm each day). This brings us to the grand total of 900 JAMs (which, not surprisingly, was used as the opening subject for the 900th JAM).

Of course, Nicholas has NOT, as is often erroneously printed, "hosted" every episode. There are 9 episodes where he appears on the panel instead. 3 of these were hosted by Clement Freud, 3 by Kenneth Williams, 1 by Geraldine Jones, 1 by Andree Melee and 1 by Ian Messiter. The last episodes not presented by Nicholas were in 1983 so he has "hosted" every recorded episode since then!

There are at least 5 other notable recordings of JAM that were made for radio and/or TV that I'm aware of:

1969 - First BBC TV Pilot (untransmitted) featuring Kenneth Williams, Sheila Hancock and Clement Freud.
1978 - A short specially shot sequence for the BBC tv series, "Jim'll Fix It". Jimmy Savile fixes it for David Whalan to host an episode of "Just A Minute". Features Kenneth Williams, Peter Jones, Sheila Hancock and Ian Messiter. This is the only time JAM was recorded and broadcast without Nicholas !!!
1981 - Second BBC TV Pilot (untransmitted) featuring Kenneth Williams, Clement Freud, Peter Jones and Patrick Moore.
2011 - Streamed live online on BBCi, with an edited broadcast the following week on BBC3 TV, this was a special charity edition for Children In Need. The panel were Lee Mack, Sheila Hancock, David Walliams and Tony Hawks.
2012 - Gardeners' Question Time meets Just A Minute. Another special in aid of BBC Children in Need. The panel of gardening experts were Eric Robson, Chris Beardshaw, Pippa Greenwood and Matthew Wilson.

So, if we count every known "recording" of JAM on radio and TV, I make it 905. If you split "Silver Minutes" into 2 parts, as broadcast, then it's 906. If you include the 2 "cassette only" parts (which didn't include any "new" material so they aren't really what you would call "episodes"), it's 908.

I can also recall several interviews with Nicholas over the years where he has included a round of JAM as part of the interview, but you couldn't really refer to those as JAM recordings.

If Nicholas continues making 27 episodes a year, we should hit the 1000 mark in 2018.

It's worth noting, though, that Nicholas has also included JAM as a part of his one-man stage shows over the years (although it's unlikely any of these were recorded), so he has probably been chairman on more than 1000 performances of the show already!

As far as I am concerned, Deans guide is the definitive reference. When
in doubt, use Dean. That works on anything JAM.

I agree, Epsen. However, the OP (Mark) arrived at a total of 835, so presumably wasn't including the 25th Anniversary or 40th Anniversary clips shows (which were actually 3 weeks worth of episodes in total) or any of the radio/tv spin-offs.

Of course, we still reach 900 excluding the anniversary specials, simply by adding on the two TV pilots. How the BBC arrived at the total of 900 is the big question. Did they just count what was on Dean's list (which adds up to 900) or did they use a different numbering system altogether?

Simon and all,

It's interesting reading how we got to 900 episodes of JAM, but I think
there is something you're forgetting and I don't know if you would count it
as an episode or not. That was a short special (I think about five minutes)
on "What I like about BBC 7" with CF and others. I don't remember who the
others were at the moment, but Nicholas was host. Would this count as an
episode even though it was only one round and probably used as filler? I
had it in my archives once, but I probably don't now. I think the date was
some time in 2003, maybe as a one year anniversary of the launch of BBC 7
special. As I say, it was very short and wasn't meant as a serious JAM
episode, but was done in the same format with at least some of the regulars.

I was in Central London yesterday (to watch a Radio Comedy produced by Claire Jones) and took a look in Waterstones, Oxford Street. They had the JAM book in their "best sellers" section. It was selling at full price, though, 20 GBP (33 USD), so I'm holding out until it's in the sales.

BBC7 launched in December 2002, so it is certainly possible the filler you're thinking of was recorded in 2003. It would probably have been recorded on the same evening as one of the shows, like they did with the "Why I Love Just A Minute" clip that was added into the 40th anniversary special.

I'll add it to my list of "other notable JAM recordings" - something else for the JAM completists to track down...

According to Amazon the publisher is listed as "Canongate UK" so perhaps it's only available in the US as an imported hardback from November 1st?

The Kindle version is available now, though, and is a LOT cheaper (only $12.60 compared to the $32.95 list price for the hardback edition).

James, is this the special round recorded for Radio 7's 7th birthday in 2009 or is it an earlier recording as alluded to by Tony?

I found a recording featuring Paul Merton, Charles Collingwood, Josie Lawrence and Chris Neill that would have been made in 2009 on the same evening that Series 56 Episodes 2 and 5 were recorded. The special round was entitled simply "Radio 7". It doesn't feature Clement Freud as he had passed away earlier that year but then he did appear in the 40th anniversary special in 2007 talking about "Why I Love Just A Minute", another special round that was recorded on the same evening as Series 52, Episodes 2 and 9.

I think there were at least two of the regulars. The subject sounds

Here is my review to Trip Advisor on my recent visit to the Museum of Comedy in London-

I thought maybe some of you would be interested or could pass on the word about it

-maybe they could put together a JAM show case like they had for the Goon Show and other British comedy tv/radio shows.

I did visit the Museum and while they are small and just opened for a couple of months I really enjoyed it and recommend to any Fans of more "Vintage" British Comedy.

The museum is in the basement of St George's church in Bloomsbury - a good sized Banners point the way down the stairs.

A woman was at the front desk and gave me a tour of what they had and we had a nice conversion on British comedy. ( I was the only visitor sadly).

They have "library" of videos/cds/records to watch/listen to and a vast selection of books on comedy shows and stars.. I was like a kid in a candy store- I could stayed there all day.

They have several glass cases of memorabilia of shows like the Goon Show/Steptoe & Son/ Tommy Cooper props/scripts ( some you can sit and read).

There is also a "confessional" booth from the Dave Allen show where you can put on silly hats and make a short Video of yourself being Quite Silly.

Also a small theater room ( where they also have stand up and comedians appear on various nights) where they had a video of the late great Tommy Cooper- I sat and watched his interview on The Parkinson show- funny stuff.

They have a small snack bar with beverages/crisps and candy so you can just pull up a chair and enjoy their Library of Comedy material. There is also a small selection of books to buy and some photo prints.

The material ran from Music Hall to 80's comedy shows and performers- just what I am interested in.

I found a stack of Radio Times from the 70's and sat down to look from them.

Sadly I had to meet up with my friends later that afternoon but as I said I could have stayed there for hours and if I lived in London would have been a frequent visitor.

The Staff were friendly and knowledgeable ( and were patient as this American blabbed on and on LOL)

I know that many of the collectors of British Comedy are passing away and leaving relatives & friends with these Wonderful collections that they have no idea of their value or what to do with them.

The Museum of Comedy Gives such things a Home to be looked after and enjoyed by others.

If you like Vintage British Comedy and are in London please support them with a visit or tell others that may like it too,

here is their website for more information and they also have a Facebook page

Thoughts on season 7:

To me this felt like it was the time when everything was clicking and firing on all cylinders. The complete lack of "outside guests" helps to make the show feel really comfortable and established now. Everyone knows each other, and that means they can actually take more liberties and be more ruthless than they would if guests were on. Even Andre Melley seems to show more of her personality during this run.

- Kenneth has calmed down a bit from the excesses of his season 6 antics and picks his shots a bit more carefully. But he ramps up on some of his "we shouldn't have women on this show!" stuff and especially his "you great nit" abusive lines to Peter. He also demonstrates several more ridiculous accents, including an absurd Scottish one he busts out a few times. On one occasion I had the show on in the car and had to pull over because it was making me laugh so much.

- Aimi MacDonald was finally less annoying to me on these shows partly because Nicholas stopped patronising her so much and / or sucking up to her. He's more strict with his rulings even when she pouts and this makes Aimi altogether funnier I think -- we're getting to see what she's like now when she doesn't get her own way.

- The shows when it is all four men are just off-the-charts during this season. The banter is just flying around. The wit is sharp. Clement goes for the juggler with his attacks on Nick on a few occasions. Peter often delivers the killer one-liners. Then you get the extended back-and-forth duels of attrition between Clement and Derek. And the duels of showman one-man-ship between Derek and Kenneth with their array of silly slow or fast voices.

- Sheila has now really cemented herself as a regular and the shows where she's the 4th player are almost as good as those when it's Derek.

- Clement seems to win every single week during this season

*Special note*

In a review of a previous season I noted that Clement would seem to studiously avoid mentioning his grandfather, well, in one episode here he does talk about him, if only briefly on a challenge.

It's the show from 13th February. Here's the transcript from Dean's site:

NP: I had to deliberate in my mind, because I have to listen for so many things all at once. But er 13 seconds on Albert Einstein with you now Derek starting now.

DN: He also wrote a pot-boiler with a man called Mister Freud. It wasn't a very good book so...

BUZZ

NP: Clement Freud has challenged.

Topic: Re: 900?

Message 70 / 100
DeanSep 21, 2014

I begin by saying what should be obvious – there are several ways you can count things. It depends on what you are counting. And you are very welcome to count whatever it is you want to! Really you are!

Also while numbers have the sound of certainty, they often aren’t. An example. Let’s say you moved into your house four years and 10 months ago, and I asked you how many years you’ve been in your house. Would you say “four years” or round it up to “five years”. It’s statistically acceptable to round up, but it isn’t entirely accurate, is it. And then what if I said to you “how old are you?” If you were 39 years and 10 months old, would you say 39 – or round up to 40?

I can add quite a few things to Simon’s list of shows to be added, if we are counting “recordings”.

* I have two recordings from Edinburgh in the early 90s when they played JAM every day with Tony Slattery and Graham Norton as regulars - it gets a mention in Nicholas’s book.
* And what about this – a recording of JAM a few years ago at Edinburgh which featured Nicholas, Paul, Gyles, Jenny and Scott Mills that was never broadcast on the radio.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p009hlyf Even the whistleblower of the time, Sarah Sharpe is involved in this one!
* There was at least one Royal Variety show that featured a JAM game with the old gang of four and Nicholas, and who knows, maybe more.
* What about the recording that featured Paul, Gyles, Sheila, Marcus, Nicholas and Clive Anderson which they recorded as promos for Radio Four Extra. There was an audience and am ex-JAM producer John Lloyd was in charge of it.
* What about the ep of Have I Got News For You which Nicholas guest hosted where they played JAM for five minues?
* What about the recording of the Linda Smith tribute after she died where they played JAM for quarter of an hour?
* What about the piece they did on the Indian love of JAM in 2012... that included several bits of the game being played.
* What about the many I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clues where they’ve played the game?
* And what about this, broadcast on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMSEhBY82SA – if you look through video sharing sites you can see quite a few examples of ämateur”productions of JAM.
* And if we are counting up recordings, why restrict ourselves to the UK? Ian Messiter ran the game for many years in South Africa. Even used the Just A Minute name. What about the Swedish version, Pa Minuten http://en.wikipedia..org/wiki/P%C3%A5_minuten which has been running almost as long as the UK version? And if we include these what about One Minute Please, JAM’s forerunner which had the same rules except that it was played a male v female team game.
* And then what about the time me and some friends played the game and recorded it. We even rigged up some buzzers!
* And I haven’t yet mentioned that controversial untransmitted show from 1969 when a show was abandoned partway through a recording.

All in all, if we include “every recording”, we have well and truly passed 1000 and are probably getting close to 2000. Or on the other hand, you could get less than 900 by just counting one recording if they record two shows on one night.

So – and I say it again – you can get almost any number you like, depending on  what you count. And – again - it really is up to you what you want to count.

Here’s what I think is worth counting.

One – it makes sense to count apples as apples and pears as pears. I think the sensible thing is to count JAM radio shows and JAM TV shows and Junior Just A Minute shows all separately. And within the radio shows, I’d separate out the highlights shows. If I was the producer of JAM, I think I’d just count the radio shows if I was wanting to mark a “hundred” anniversary.

Two – I don’t count shows where they played the game for a few minutes as part of another show. I’m counting shows which stand alone as Just A Minute. Because the problem is it adds in almost anything. If we count Jim’ll Fix It, why not The One Show ep of a few years ago when Nicholas, Gyles and Tony Hawks played it for a few minutes. And if we count that, why not the countless occasions when Nicholas in particular has been asked to play it in an interview.

Three – I’m also not counting shows that were not broadcast in their entirety on either radio or TV. Untransmitted shows don’t count if we are talking about something where the reason for making it is to be broadcast.

Put JAM aside and consider say Dads Army. I think if you asked someone “how many episodes of Dads Army were made”, most people would say 80 – the number of TV shows – rather than automatically add in the 67 radio shows. But even if your answer would be 147... would you really add in things like Morecambe and Wise or the Royal Variety Shows where Arthur Lowe and the cast appeared in costume and in character. Perhaps if you were an obsessed fan – like me – you would be interested in trying to have a complete list of these, but I think these aren’t episodes of Dads Army.

But – I do think that it counts for something to add JAM on radio, JAM on TV and Junior Just A Minute together in the sense of being able to answer questions like “how many times has Nicholas Parsons appeared on Just A Minute?” You could separate everything out but it will still be meaningful to say Nicholas has chaired the broadcast show for the 900th time (when that does happen!).

For anyone not yet bored with this topic, ( I don’t blame you if you are because I am) I have also written about it recently on the blog. http://justaminutesite.blogspot.co.nz/2014/09/900-and-other-figures.html

So again – count what you like, but I hope I’ve tried to explain what I would count. And it’s interesting that the BBC came to the same figure.

Subject: Re: [just-a-minute] 900?

Simon

Topic: book launch

Message 71 / 100
DeanSep 21, 2014

has been almost three weeks since the book launch, so well over due to write it up. First if you want to see a couple of pics, have a look at the blog http://justaminutesite.blogspot.co.nz/

So to what happened.

The launch was held at the Ivy Club, a famous old club in the Theatre district of London. Having looked it up on the Internet, I noticed it had a dress code so dressed up a bit.
I thought it was within walking distance of the hotel, so I set off on foot, but I got lost so I had to double back and get a cab. But it was a very hot day and I arrived more than a little late, and a bit hot.

As I walked in, Josie Lawrence and Christopher Biggins were coming out of the room so I felt like I was already in good company. It was a smallish room where it was held and a bit stuffy so it got a bit sweaty. I'm not very good in this sort of sitaution anyway being crap at small talk and slightly deaf which makes it hard to hear people in a noisy room.

There were several JAM stars there - Julian Clary, Paul Merton, Gyles Brandreth, Tony Blackburn, Suki Webster, June Whitfield. Derek Nimmo's widow, Pat was there. Annie Parsons was there, she had been very nice to me when I went to Stratford-on-Avon and said "Hello" as if she remembered me. Malcolm Messiter was there.

My old friend, Keith Matthews, who helped with the book, was there, and was in top form, getting everyone's autographs and chatting them up.

And of course Nicholas was there. At first he looked a bit frail and a bit worried, and I honestly wondered if he was a bit unwell. But it came time for speeches and it was like a light turned on. Suddenly Nicholas the performer emerged, and he looked younger and on top of things. He gave a brilliant very funny speech, full of anecdotes and reminscences. Keith and I got a mention, but it was mainly, as you'd expect, about the show and the book, with a bit of history, some memories of Kenneth, Derek, Peter and Paul, as well as Ian Messiter and David Hatch. He also quoted some of Julian's double entrendre lines. Of Clement Freud he said "he always used to wonder why everyone else got a laugh and he didn't" as a way of explaining how the show became more entertainment and less competition, against Clement's wishes. It's a good line and was meant as a joke, of course.

Nicholas was very kind to me. Keith told him I had been up at Edinburgh for the JAM recording - though I wasn't actually this year - and he thanked me for being such a devoted fan.
I didn't stay all that long as I felt like I was swimming in sweat, and as I say, these things aren't all that natural for me. Still it was a great occasion and it was clear what genuine affection the entertainment community has for Nicholas

I'm quite late to this party, but I've just discovered Wordaholics on iPlayer with our Gyles in the chair.

The sample at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0274q9k was great... 'Nerds of Prey' tickled me excessively.

Hi everyone,

I would be most grateful if someone could please share a recording of the below JAM episode:

“JAM 452/28/9
Broadcast date: 18 February 1995.
Panel: Paul Merton, Peter Jones, Wendy Richard, Lee Simpson.
Subjects: The third row of this audience, package deals, raffles, Greek Gods, getting confused, the great escape, peel, a wonderful moment, how to make a fruit cake, how to make an umbrella,
try-outs, my favourite skirt.”

I’ve looked everywhere I know of online for this ep. but to no avail. I saw that Emile Jumean from this group uploaded it few years ago but unfortunately MediaFire says that this file is no longer available.

By my reckoning this is the episode which NP refers to in his book according to this article (Nicholas Parsons reveals Wendy Richard’s strange dislike of Paul Merton) at

http://www.express.co.uk/expressyourself/192209/Nicholas-Parsons-Just-a-minute

A couple of years ago I came across an archive of 405 JAM episodes starting from the pilot in 1967 through to 2007 including the TV episodes and NP appearance on That Reminds Me in 1999. However, this archive is missing some episodes one of which is ep. 452. I’m happy to share if the existence of this archive wasn’t old news to members on here!

Thanks for reading and I hope that someone could help.

Cheers,
Amro

Incidentally, why do my messages seem to take ages to get through? I thought post wasn’t moderated on this list.

Cheers,

Amro
