Topic: The JAMmer stream is flaky

Message 1 / 8

For whoever is interested; Our dear beloved server streaming JAM 24/7 is
sadly entering the last round.

This server has kept going for several years now, and these days it's
almost constantly loaded with listeners. It is just a consumer-grade,
cheap (pink!) mini laptop that quite frankly I'm amazed has lasted this
long. The power supply got fried some months ago and had to be replaced,
but other than that it's kept going. Kudos to ASUS for making stuff that
last.

Either way, it has now finally started struggling severely. I suspect
both disk errors and motherboard problems, it can't even boot in regular
mode but requires some manual fiddling to make the services start
properly during boot.

We have experienced some downtime lately and I am afraid we will
continue to do so until I got a hardware replacement. Not entirely sure
what machine I'll use for this, but I'll solve it one way or another.
The JAMmer must live!

Thanks, Espen for keeping this running.  I listen to it from time to time.

Do you think it would be possible to run it from a Raspberry Pi?

It could well be possible to run it from a Raspberry Pi, but it might start to freeze if too many people were listening at once.  I wonder if anyone on this list has a laptop they don't need anymore which could be sent to Espen?

Hi James and thanks.

It's an interesting suggestion, but I don't think there are any shoutcast server binaries compiled for the Raspberry (did a quick google but found nothing), and even if there was I don't think it would manage 100+ simultaneous connections. Not sure, but I doubt it.

But it'd be darn cool for sure to run it on a Raspberry! Love those little rascals. :)

No, please, it's very very kind of you Josey but I could never accept such a contribution.

There are options, I just gotta figure out the best option. I think I will invest in a quite capable server hardware that can serve multiple purposes in my home, where the shotcast stream is just one of many services running.

We'll see, but whatever I decide the server *will* continue to live as best as it can. It may just, as stated, be a bit unstable until a replacement has taken over.

I'll keep you posted :)
